Slow-losers/Low BMI ers.... do you ever reach goal?!?!

Recommended Posts

BMI prior to surgery was just under 36. I'm not quite 5'7", but almost. Weight, date of seminar, 228. Weight day before surgery, 205. I reached doctor's goal in 5 months, and my goal, five lbs less, a month later. Surgery was June 11, 2010. I've been maintaining for about 2.5 years. I go between 143 and 147. (Averaged 10 lbs per month after surgery, sometimes more, sometimes less, but slow and steady)

This thread is for slow losers, you seemed to lose quite quickly.

I can totally relate to you. How are you doing now?

I'm in the same boat. Out three months and have only lost 15 lbs. I track everything I eat on MFP. I just can't explain how disappointed I am.

It feels better knowing I'm not alone.

My surgery was in August 2012 and I've lost next to nothing. To date I've lost 39 lbs and haven't gone anywhere else. I'm so disgusted and a little bitter when I go on this board. I don't get why so many are doing so well and I'm not. I follow the plan. I don't want to be ultra skinny but i want to be healthy and feel good about the way i do. So disappointed.

I sooo feel your pain. I lose about 1/4 a lb per week if I lose any at all. I hate the other boards that just say "it's a plato". I would love to plato after losing 40 lbs the first month. But I lost 8 lbs the first week, mostly Water weight from the hospital, then only lost 5 more lbs in the last two months. I want to know what I'm doing wrong.

I feel your pain. I was sleeved march 27 2013 and I'm down 50. Very frustrating. I work hard at the gym. Much much more then I ever have. I eat super clean. I don't get enough Water in but I do get a decent amount. I'm so embarrassed I haven't even seen my surgeon since 2 months out. I'm going on Monday because I know I have to. Ugh! I'm very happy with the 50 lost. I never been able to get any weight off it's just confusing why it takes longer then anyone else.

Do any of us slow losers use sleeping pills? I just read an article that say it makes you not lose weight. What you think?

Now I know I'm not alone. I'm so discouraged too. Got sleeved with my daughter October 11. 2013. She's lost 60 and I've lost 31 (I'm only 4ft tall so I'm not a low bmi. Starting weight 227)and now I'm in a stall. If I knew I was going to get there I wouldn't be so stressed, but Im so afraid of failure. I'm going to work on my Water and check my Protein intake. I hope we all lose the weight we want to lose.

You are not alone!!! I finally went to see my surgeon this week. I've been too embarrassed to go back because I only lost 52 pounds and I'm 11 months post op. I was shocked at his reaction. He was very pleased with my weight loss. I have 25 more pounds to go to reach my personal goal. I know I can do it. We all can. it made me feel better to hear words of encouragement. My start weight was 227 also. Please don't beat yourself up. You are doing great

I usually lose about a quarter lb a week and drop two lbs after my period. How much did you lose on average a week/month?

This is me to a T!

You are not alone. It's so frustrating isn't it? Everyone talks about platos but for a few of us we just live with the plato from the beginning.

I have to keep track of every single thing I eat and stay under 700 calories to even lose a 1/4 lb a week.

I am glad that I am not alone but still very frustrated about it I didn't do the surgery to lose only 15 lbs

I am doing the dukan diet now.I started this diet in March of 2013 I went from 220 lbs to 195 lbs in 16 week and then I got stuck and in October 2013 I had the sleeve to help with the weight loss I lost another 10 lbs before the surgery on liquid diet and since my surgery another 15 lbs only and I am stuck at 170 lbs I need to loose another 20 lbs.

Have you read the posts on here about drinking more Water and getting enough Protein? They swear by it. I'm only on my third day so don't know if it works, one woman lost 11 lbs in a week just from making sure she drank 2 Lts of Water a day and focusing on her Protein more. I've also heard that taking sleep aids slow your weight way down.

I was done in Dec 2013 and had only lost 15, then I got sick last week and lost another 4.

I agree, it makes me feel a little angry, I didn't do this major surgery just to lose a few lbs.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
