First Dr. Appointment

Recommended Posts

Hi! I will go to my first dr. appointment on Wednesday morning. Woo Hoo!!!

I want to take a list of questions I should ask him, such as:

Will he suture the band in place, will he suture the port in place....

Does anyone have any suggestions on other questions I should ask?

Thanks for your help!

You might want to ask him where he will put the port. My understanding is that research has shown there are fewer port problems when the port is placed just under the sternum (breastbone).

This is a question that I asked... what happens if I develope a stomach virus or food poisoning and begin vomiting my toe nails up.

Sounds grose, but its a reality.

It's definitely not good to be repeatedly vomiting with your band. I do know of people who's bands were compromised due to excessive vomiting from a flu/etc. Best advice is that you have something like Phenergran on hand at all times (so you may want to ask for a script for it), use it - then call to have your fill taken out until your virus is over.

Hope this helps!

Leatha

LOL! I work for the Health and Wellness Dept. of a school district, so I help to organize district wide flu shot clinics. I will be the first to tell you that flu shots are extremely important! However, it is important to remember that not every strain of flu or stomach virus will be prevented with a flu shot. Best prevention is get the shot, second best prevention is wash your hands, and avoid exposure as much as possible. Ok, I'll get off my soapbox now!

Went the doc this am. My surgeon is a cutie!!!! LOL, Penni, Dr. Billy has a rival!

He has a great manner and made me feel very comfortable talking about my history of weight problems. (very unusual for me!!)

Anywho, he is filing all the paperwork with the insurance and the waiting begins. Wish me luck....

Blossom, are you a self-pay or insurance? If insurance, do you know if they pay on the band? Best of luck to you in everything!

Marie, I am hoping to go with insurance, but will self pay as a last resort. I did call the insurance co and inquire about the band. I was told that it is possible to have them pay for it, but I may have to be persistant. Well, I can turn into a pit bull when I have to, so persitance shouldn't be a problem. Patience, on the other hand, is another story!:D

Penni, I will see what I can do! Maybe I should just tell him we are having a hottie dr. contest and see if he will let me take a pic, LOL!

Thanks, ya'll!

Heck, just take one he will never know what it is for. I am taking a pic of Dr. Billy when I go in for my checkup on Aug 10th. I would have taken one at the hospital before my surgery last Friday but I never saw him till after the surgery.

Penni,

Why were you disbanded? Where there severe complications? Do you plan to get the band back? This really scares me now -- I am having second thoughts.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
