Anyone attempt a "Pre" Pre-OP diet a few months prior to having to start your actual Pre-op diet?

Recommended Posts

I wonder about this..because my Doctor tells me that recovery is better, the smaller you are. So he suggests trying to lose as much weight as possible. Of course, if you are like me..its not just losing weight thats hard..its keeping it off too..but really..without a tiny tummy, its sooo hard to live off of shakes forever... I just worry... i feel like as I am waiting for surgery, I am getting fatter.

I know of a few girls who live around me that are doing this right now so that they can lower their post op risks and shrink the liver. One of them lost close to 30lbs in a month from just being on 3 shakes a day plus a lean cuisine with a small salad. Granted she has a lot of weight to lose but seeing her lose that much made her smile so much brighter than I have ever seen before.

Keeping the weight off should be easy if you follow the Dr.'s and NUT's instructions. When you resort to eating slider foods (search the forum for it) or junk foods that is when some people see their weight creeping back up.

Some people also think they are gaining when their cycle is about to come, or they have been building muscles mass. Bottom line: Don't follow the # on your scale, take measurements instead.

I did it, lost 48lbs. My doctor was thrilled. Said I made his job so much easier.

I'm going to try to a pre-pre-op diet as soon as I get off work for the summer (in two weeks). I want to do it to lose some weight before surgery and to get used to living on shakes so post-op won't be as much of an adjustment. I was on a liquid diet from last June through January and I lost about 23 pounds, but I've gained it all back. :(

My surgery is in September and I have started some form of Pre-op diet. I am down 20 lbs.

The good part of the pre-op diet is that you will know which shakes you like and you have time to get a variety...trust me you will need variety in your shakes. The Bad part is stocking up on those shakes only to find out that you don't quite like the way the shake tastes post op.

My taste buds didn't change post op, but others on here have had their taste buds change.

Start with my fav's Syntrax's nectar or powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury, or Go with other popular ones like Isopure or Jay Robb. Make sure there is a low carb to Protein ratio, and try to get samples before you invest in a huge tub. Good luck on your pre-pre op diets!

I wish I could, but if I loss too much before the surgery, my insurance won't approve me. :(

I went to a weight management class last year and worked with a dietitian. All in all I have lost 52 lbs and I have my surgery in 4 days.

I wish I could, but if I loss too much before the surgery, my insurance won't approve me. :(

I was just worrying about this earlier today...I've started drinking Protein shakes at least once a day, and I'm trying to actively make better food choices. I've cut way down on my carb intake, eliminated all junk food, soda and fast food, and even completely given up coffee--because the way I was drinking it was putting it in the 350-calorie range! So far, having changed nothing else, I've lost 9 lbs in a month. Almost 2lbs a week, not bad. Then I thought, "hmmm, will my insurance company see this as proof that I don't need the surgery, since I'm making progress on my own?"

What do you folks think? Should I ease off on the pre-pre-op diet and weight loss till I at least know my surgery date? It's definitely happening this summer, but the actual date hasn't been given to me yet.

Well, if your Dr.s instructs it, his/her office can write it up as a part of a monitored diet plan.

I am pre-op and started eating healthier about 10 weeks ago. (Surgery to be scheduled for this summer) I will try a few shakes pre liquid diet but I am happy right now with how I am doing the old school way. I still treat myself but I do it differently so it's not in the same category as old 'treats'. For example I will order an individual mediteranian pizza but tell them I want it on multigrain with 1/8th of the usual amt of cheese. Then I will take cpl days to eat it. I will really miss my carbs, but having taken a lot of the constant hunger away should make it at least a little easier during liquidfest. Plus if I can lower my complication odds even just a little it's worth it. Just my two cents... :)

My insurance requires 3 months of doctor and nutritionist monitored dieting before the surgery (6 months if I go with my own doctor, 3 if I go with the bariatric experts). So the first weigh in with them is considered my official start weight. I can lose as much as I want before the surgery, and it's still covered. I asked them to clarify again just to make sure I wasn't misunderstanding.

So maybe you should ask your doctor or even call the insurance company to see if you are in danger of losing too much weight to qualify for the surgery.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
