Slightly controversial drink (wine, spirit, beer) poll

Ok question...when did y'all have your first drink post op and what was it? My surgeon said no drinking at all for 6 months. My Lil sister is getting married this summer and I'd love to have a glass of wine at least.

It is best that way (wait to month 6) in order to be over all food issues before complicating things with alcohol. Also a fair amount of weight loss will be lost by month 6 and alcohol is known to slow down or stall weight loss.

oh no I know I'm not a failure! 170 was my goal- to put things in perspective- I weighed 170 pounds at 10 years of age. I wear mediums and size 10. I have never been happier. At 262 pounds I was 2x and size 24!

That really illustrates the point about different body proportions. I wear a size 10, too.

I'm not quite 3 weeks out so reading this thread really made me thirsty! Lol. I miss my wedding cake martinis :) my surgeon said I would be a cheap date from now on.. My husband was pretty happy about that! I've heard if you're going to have dinner and drinks, have the drink first because you won't feel like drinking after your meal. Is this true for most people??

Yes, I usually always have my drink before dinner. Two problems with this. The drink usually always makes me eat in a less controlled manner and I usually don't give myself the obligatory 15 min wait time before eating. Second issue is caused by the first and because the food comes out right after or while still finishing drink. For this reason, I am tempted not even to drink and eat in the same session. Not sure. What do others do?

If I'm at home I have a occasional glass of wine...which one is enough before I start feeling warm n flushed. Yesterday I went to the brewers/cardinals game and I asked my husband to get me something to drink (meaning Water, lemonade ect) well he comes back with a 12.00 margarita....seriously, he was being thoughtful so he thought because pre-op I loved them. So I began to sip on it, a hour later I was feeling tipsy...really tipsy! My husband thought it was funny, I'm sure I was funny to watch getting tipsy off ONE MARGARITA! :)

That sounds yummy! Try vanilla vodka' date=' orange juice, and a splash of diet sprite. It's another creamsicle concoction. <img src='http://www.bariatricpal.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />[/quote']

That sounds super yummy, I'm so gonna try :)

Interesting!! you seem like you have a good head on your shoulders. I know you will make your goal! My sister is my height, weighs 140 (and has always been pretty thin) and she is a size 4-6.. Most people say they don't think I weigh 170ish pounds- most people guess I am about 150. I guess I carry my weight well? And when I was 262 nobody believed that either. Would I like to weigh 140? sure, but.... I know myself and I know it wouldn't be a maintainable weight for me.

I like margaritas, only now I buy the Skinnygirl ones. A serving is 100 calories. They are tart because less sugar but I put a little crystal light (any flavor you want in them) and they are yummy! I also do the diet cranberry and vodka. I'm 8 months out and one drink is plenty for me :)

Oops- I messed up the Margarita recipe. It was supposed to be 3 tbsp lime, 6 tequila, 3 tbsp triple sec, but I did 6 tbsp lime, 3 tbsp tequila and 6 tbsp triple sec. Lol. This is for 2 drinks. It was good though. I added splenda to sweeten it a little since it had more lime. I will leave it to the bartender (wife) next time.

I am a couple of weeks away from being a year out and I am close to goal. My surgeon advised no alcohol for six weeks after surgery. I was having wine before I was having steak, bread or Pasta :-)

What I drink has changed though.

White wine - I can no longer tolerate Sauvignon blanc or Pinot Gris, they give me heart burn. I can drink Chardonnay, dry riesling and a little champagne but not too much as it is too gassy.

Red wine- I go for Syrah or Pinot noir, the tannins in heavier reds give me heart burn.

Beer - cant do it, just like I can't do sodas. The bubbles fill me up way too fast and become unpleasant. I will have a few sips and then I am done.

Spirits and liqueurs - so far I have not had a problem with any! As long as I am not mixing with soda all is well. I dont have spirits often as I am more a wine with dinner girl but when I do I will take a grey goose dry martini, dirty. Thank you!

Frequency, well I drink at least two nights a week and sometimes more. This is often just a glass or two of wine with dinner but can be more if we are out and about. We eat out a lot and I travel a lot with work so often it is simply a social thing. I add those calories right on in there with whatever else I have and then make sure I work a little harder to burn them off if I over indulge.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
