Can anyone tell about their experience traveling home from Mexico after having VS surgery. I will be flying and I have a three hour lay-over. Is there anything specific I need to be more comfortable?

It's good that you have plenty of time for your layover... that way you're not rushing to get to your gate! As long as you're not rushing you shouldn't need a wheelchair.. I checked my bag and just had a few light things as a carry on. I purchased some yummy Vitamin Water zero at the airport and enjoyed those very much on the plane. I flew from San Diego to Boston and found traveling very easy. I didn't find it necessary to do pre-boarding or any of that stuff as by the time I was traveling home, I was already feeling quite well. I usually opt for a window seat, but for my trip home I made sure I had an aisle and I got up and walked every 45 minutes or so... also I wore my knee high compression stockings. I made sure I had lots of gas-x strips for the plane ride. I only needed a few, but some people have reported going through many of them so it's better to be prepared.

I'm worried too. I fly home Friday into Pittsburgh with only a 40 minute layover in Baltimore.

I flew to Virginia from San Diego with only a 30 minute layover in Ft Worth. Very long flights to and from. Walk as much as possible while in Mx..I was all over the place. Stretch your legs/rotate ankles/flex calves on plane. Never had any any problems. Good luck!

It's important to avoid blood clots and to rid your body of any gas left so WALK WALK WALK. Forget the wheel chair .. Take this time to keep yourself moving.

I have a 12 hour flight LA to Auckland haha ... The drs are giving us blood thinning meds and I have cute pink compression socks. We've upgraded to premium economy so we have the room to get up and walk as offer as we want ... Now I'm worried about the gas - is it stomach gas or butt gas? Lol

I'm not worried about the 40 minute layover anymore. I made it around a traffic circle in TJ and that makes NYC look like cake. ;)

For me, I haven't eaten now for 11 days (high BMI, this is my 11th day on liquids, 5th post op) and I've farted only 3 times but burp almost anytime I sip or move around a lot. Silent though and minimal pain.

Lol...that's quite a feat huh? I finally figured out that if you start stepping out into the street, they WILL stop. That was an interesting traffic obstacle. They drive crazy. :)

Well, I think I'm prepared. It doesn't seem like many people have problems while traveling, so I'm not going to worry about it. I did buy some compression stockings for my flight home as a precaution. Can't hurt, right?

On my last leg of my flight of Southwest I found out it was overbooked. I got a medical pass for boarding since I was post op so I didn't get bumped but I was terrified I wouldn't fit right.

I sat by the window and kinda tilted my body to snuggle with the window lol. My normal mother sat very comfortably in the middle seat. The only issue would have been if I would have needed to get up and walk around but it was BWI to PIT so only like 40 min.

I did need a seat belt extender on every leg but the stewardesses were so nice about it. There was a gentleman that I'm guessing weighed 100lb more than me and he didn't need one so its all it how you are built. It wasn't hard to travel at all though! The flight back was no worse than the flight there. I was not sore or slow.

I have a 3 hour layover in Dallas, TX when I come back home on Tuesday. All of the posts here have given me piece of mind. Thank you!

If you can bring a small pillow to put between you and the arm of the seat. Some people use it to put between the seat belt and your incisions. I flew from San Diego to Tampa with a plane change in Denver. There was a LONG walk to change gates. Make sure you allow plenty of time if you have gate changes.

Best wishes to you! :)

Realistically, you should be wearing them on the trip out also. I forgot mine both ways. They do give you blood thinners up until a few days before you go home, and I just made sure to shake my legs and get up and go to the bathroom every 30 minutes. It is just as good. If you plan to sleep for 6 hours straight that is a different story.

In the hospital I didn't get stockings, the nurses wrapped my legs very tight before surgery and then that was removed and redone each day for showering until I was able to walk a lot. I was a slow walker but a very fast healer after I started walking. To those concerned about the trip home, it's not bad at all! I was terrified that I was only going to be in the hospital 2 days and only there 4 days before coming home. If they would have kept me in the hospital one extra day or in TJ one extra day I would have been crazy lol! It is the perfect amount of time..........they know what they are doing!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
