Google voice?

Has anyone used Google voice on their smartphone in MX with the free Wifi at the hospital/hotel? It's free and works over wifi and it just hit me that it may work. I'm trying to dodge the 50 cents per minute.

Why can't you just use your cell phone normally? I sit with my friend at the hospital at least once a month and neither of us have had any problems talking on our phone. Will you not be near a tower?

Googe Voice isn't making the call if you're on your cell phone and on wifi, it doesn't matter. GV is making calls THROUGH your carrier, roaming will still be an issue.

I am not positive but I seem to remember that google voice on your smartphone still uses cell minutes but forwards through google voice so it would still cost you the roaming fees.

You could try something like Skype for video chat though.

I can use my phone Iniysa, it just will be $.50 per minute. I was just trying to get away with something for free.

Darnit, I thought google voice worked on WiFi. Skype it is :)

I do use Skype a lot. It does go through your internet or Wifi. Just make sure you call someone elses Skype or it costs.

I could not get google voice or viber to work for me. I have tmobile and had coverage for texting at florence but absolutely nothing at the marriott. What did work for me is bobsled, its tmobile wifi calling and worked beautifully.

I used the Skype app on my phone, put $10 in my account and called any number I wanted. In my 4 days in MX, I used a little over $5. It works through Wi-Fi and you can set it up where your own number shows up to whoever you are calling. No one knew that I was calling through Skype rather than my cell phone (some of the people I called had no idea I was in Mexico).
