The best advice you can give a fellow sleever

I think THE single most important thing- IF you have issues with food (the "lifestyle") then you need to get that fixed first. The surgery won't change your brain- it will only stop you from eating too much for a while.... You can learn to out eat the sleeve- and you will if you have issues. I don't think the surgery is for everyone- I think it's for those that are done with overindulging and done with unhealthy choices in food- and only for those people that are submitting to the idea that they will take whatever changes are given to them' date=' and embrace getting thin---- over their own bad choices. It's like anything- it's a choice. You either choose a new lifestyle and a new healthy body- or you choose to be bummed out because you can't sabotage your life and body with food..... Which in large doses is poison and deadly. ❤ I hope this makes sence. Just like any diet or self help- it will ONLY work if you are ready to COMMIT! I agree 100%! Changing your mindset is the most important factor in being successful at not just weight loss but anything. It truly breaks my heart to see all the people's posts about how they are sabotaging themselves. It does require a total commitment to change your lifestyle FOREVER or you will just end up right back in that same miserable place that led you to take such a drastic step.

Beba- just like each if our bodies is different- our minds are also- for me the daily scale loving is so that I can better keep my eyes on how my body reacts to the food I put in mouth on a daily basis. I need that connection every single day. It's a mind thing :-)

Hey to each its own. I'm a slow loser and its difficult for me to weigh in everyday.... However... I won't bite my tongue... I am guilty of weighing in for the last 3 days. Found a gain and then a 2 lb loss in my 3 weigh in each morning. So I'm like hmmmmm maybe it isn't that bad. Lol

My advise...1. Walk (or you preferred method of exercise) 2. Protein (find the shake that works for you) 3. Water (make yourself) 4. Take your vitamins/meds 5. Knowlege is power (learn about nutrition)..and most importantly, know this isn't the end - it is just the beginning of your battle. WLS is only a tool - and it is definitely NOT for everyone.

Listen... As soon as they tell you you can move around... Walk. Walk as much as you can. Especially if you have gas pains. Believe me walking equals and fast recovery. Good luck.

Find some quality Vitamins and take them religiously. You simply cannot get all the nutrients your body needs without supplements. Multivitamin with Iron, Calcium D, B-12 for starters. My surgeon also had me on Urso and a PPI, for 6 months postop. Good luck, everyone!

What's ppi ams urso?

PPI=proton pump inhibitor, like Prilosec or Prevacid; helps with excess acid and is prescribed in a prophylactic way, even if you don't have GERD.

Urso is one of several prescription meds to prevent gallstones, one of the side effects of rapid weight loss.

Oh wow. I did not know that at all. They gave me chewable tablets for acid but they never mentioned anything about gallstones. I will def. ask my surgeon when i see him soon about it. Thanks!

I am still considering VSG - 90% decided :)

I drink Protein shakes regularly now, as I go to the gym frequently and play basketball. I has always been overeating that kept me fat :(

Did everyone's taste change so readily after surgery, or is this only something for a small percentage? I can't imagine all of a sudden not enjoying the flavour.

My best advice is to not be controlled by the scale I know it is difficult to want to lose lose lose but if you weight in the morning and youre up a few oz and your whole day is ruined thats no way to live. Only take to heart a scheduled weight day, don feel like a failure just look at your logs of food and excercise and ask these simple questions.1) did u get your Water in 2) did u excercise at least 30 min 4-5 days that week 3) is it time to up the fitness to something more challenging 4) how are the carbs fats and sugars on your log ( keep carbs and fat to half your protien intake) 6) is something stressing you out? Resolve the issues bc stress will effect your weight loss! Hope this helps best of luck!

      Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs. 
      I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm. 
      I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order. 
      My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

      Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
      Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
      A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.

      I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
      Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

      Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
      I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

      Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
