Dr. Gerald Kirshenbaum - Considering Dr. Kirshenbaum

Recommended Posts

U-N-F-I-L-L Okay, 0.2 cc's may not sound like much of an unfill...but it sure made a huge difference!!!

I can eat solids again with no discomfort... and just the right restriction (well, the scale will confirm that soon enough I guess).

Tina,

I think i am in your boat......... or your past boat! I got a fill on Oct 25th; Dr. K filled me all the way and then took some out. I thought I felt good for a few days and was steady at losing a pound every other day (yippee) but for the past few days I can barely even keep Water down. Were you spitting up a lot? I think I am spitting up half of what i eat! I am not eating very much. Yesterday I went and bought some baby food just so i could have some nourishment as I was getting worried. I am hoping this will pass and I wont have to get an unfill. I like losing the weight but I don’t want to get sick.

I also hear you on the wanting to eat mass amounts of food. I am almost 7 months out and have not taken one bite of a big juicy burger, or a Chicago style dog……

I miss eating too. I wish I could remember the saying Being thin feels better then eating “that” tastes. Something like that!

Let me know how you were felt when you were to full.

Thanks,

Angie

Mal,

Thanks!

That sounds great! I'm working BUT I'll hurry out of there as fast as I can and hopefully get to RR before it's too late to meet everyone!

I hope a lot of people can attend!

d~

p.s. that's Friday, November 9th @7pm @ the RR at Arapahoe and I-25?

Do you make a reservation? How do we find the lapband group?

tina: how long were you overly restricted? ouch! glad you had an unfill!

Dee,

After they called you in at Dr. K's yesterday... I realized who you were... lucky me, I sat there until 3:55 p.m. and left at 4:15... quite a haul to Longmont, but I was able to pick my kid up in time from daycare... made it in less than an hour...woo hoo!

I got filled last Thursday, so was over-filled for 4 days total... lost a pound a day according to Dr. K's scale (mine says differently)(it always does...). It was unpleasant/uncomfortable, but certainly bearable... except for the PBing 3 nigths in a row... by the 4th nite, I had placed myself on liquids only, so I got a break. :D

Good luck with your surgery later this month and enjoy the ride... it's got some bumpy spots, but its well worth taking!!!

Tina :clap2:

Angie,

I was "spitting up" (vomitting)(PBing)(what have you) each night... water went down hard. However, if you were fine at first and it's only been a problem since you threw up the first few times, perhaps its a learning curve thing... something got stuck or you accidentally ate too much/too quick (darn band is unpredictable and fickle). When you spit up, your stomach can swell up, making you tighter, which then creates a vicious cycle... you can test it, by doing full liquids a few days and seeing if it improves (mine did not).

Or, as they taught us in law school..when in doubt, check it out...Call your doctor. I would not recommend that you prolong discomfort or jeopardize your health... especially if its hard getting water down (you do NOT want to get dehydrated). Call the doc.

The band works great when you have a good fill. I lost a little more than three pounds a week on average from first fill to second fill and was not having any problems (I did throw up three times in that 4 weeks, but it was learning curve issues...doughy bread, too fast, too much). I liked my food volume and things went down fine...but during the last week, pre-second fill, I did notice I was able to increase my volume... I think initially my stomach may have had some residual swelling left from the surgery...which went down/away between the first fill and the second, thus making the band looser...plus, the weight loss also makes the fat pad in the stomach smaller...so the second (and subsequent) fills are necessary.

When I was too full, it felt like things were going down too hard and slow. I also got that uncomfortably stuffed filling too quickly and would start sliming and/or eventually throw up until my stomach was empty and the discomfort went away. Sometimes, when I drank, the swallows went down hard and I was belchy and making those weird feeling gurgly sounds in my throat. (pleasant, huh?) Normally, for me, when I eat, I eat until I feel a fullness without discomfort. About a cup of food for me. I also can drink easily and about a cup or two at a time (avoiding meal times of course).

That's my experience as requested. You know, if you are uncomfortable and it does not feel right...please don't wait too long to act. The band works nicely when it's a good fill and the weight will keep coming off nicely too (I'm assuming you make good food choices)... I told Dr. K, while I appreciated the pound a day weight loss when it was too tight, I'd much rather go with a better fill...and do it comfortably... and safely.

Tina :biggrin1:

Hey Gang!!! Long time no chat! Lots of newbies here since I last checked in.....but I need some advice! I was banded by Dr. K last December so I'm quickly coming up on my 1 yr bandiversary! My last fill was in May and my weight loss has stalled in the last few months. Not sure if it's b/c I need another fill or if I have stretched my band? Anyways, I really want to do a fill under fluro w/Dr. K....but last time I tried to ask for that, I think Marilyn said that Dr. K only does Fluro fills if there is a serious problem!? So my question is how do you suggest I convince them that I need a fill under fluro??

Thanks for the help! Glad to see you all doing so well!!

I just wanted you to know that it is nice to see you around here again. I remember reading your early posts which helped me in deciding on getting the band. (thanks)

I wish I could help you with your question...I was thinking maybe you could contact Natalie (she is new in the office with Dr. K, but she would probably be a good person to contact).

Let us know how things go.

Angie38 - I got a fill in mid October and was tight. For me I have had to decided, whether it was modifying my behaviour more than I wanted or not. If I follow the "Band rules" very carefully, I am fine. BUT!!!!! if I get in the least hurry, or start the meal dehydrated, or take too big a FIRST bite, then I get stuck. Also if I am tense or had a squable with the hubby I am a lot tighter and need to use liquids for a while. It has been an up and down decision about whether I think I am too tight or not really, or do I just not want to be so controlled. Right now, I am voting for the control and trying to modify my behaviour AGAIN!!!

Just my two cents on the tightness of a fill

Mare

Mal~ I'm so sorry to hear about your kitty. It is sad that both your guys went in the same year. We did that too. We lost all three of our pets in the same year. (they were 12 and 11 and 10) Hope your family finds a way to work through it. I feel sad for you!

Mare~ I took your appointment today!!!! I called to make a fill appointment and jokingly said, you have anything for today? (ya right) and she said yes! So I took it!

He put in .5 today. (hope it does okay) My first fill since the re-do. Little scared with how much it was. But all the last juice was still in there! Yeah! So I now have 1.8cc in there! Woo hoo! I hope food goes through!:omg:

Um...girls....we still don't have a day for RR! Who all wanted Saturday at lunch? Who all wants evening Friday? Lap Dancer...opinion please? Mal, will you go if its lunch? Dynamo, any preference to you? Angie, are you really going to show up? Heehee! Drews? Dee, Mare....votes people! hahaaha! Saturday night?? Looks like three options there....:confused:

Okay -

I am really mixed up about Red Robin. The reason we are going with the weekend is that Lap Dancer is supposed to be coming. But she hasn't posted recently -that I have read - Lap??? are you out there. Otherwise we usually meet the second Tuesday evening which worked for Drew. I hear you, Anita, about the long drive at night. I am available Friday night and at 12:30 on Saturday. You all decide. I'd love to see you. I miss you all. And would love to show off my tan before it all peels and fades away. Ha....ha

I appreciate the discussion about the fill. I have a lot of questions about mine lately, as I am PBing more often, is it "old habits die hard?" "I am stupid....stupid.....stupid?" Or is it a case for an unfill? Mare - you did a great description. I think the party is over, I'm back from Margaretaville, finally got the son to get rid of the Halloween candy (that I don't seem to PB) and I am so facing my stuff! Yikes! Who am I as an eater?

Before the band, I was either dieting or binging, and sometimes both. Will I be able to sustain a "normal, healthy" attitude and behavior towards food? I've been at this a long time.

Anyway, someone decide on a date and time and I'll try to be there.

Hugs,

Michelle

Ok I am soooo confused, when is RR? I hope I can make it, whenever it is!!! I am getting used to having a fill, it is weird, sometimes it feels like I dont have any restriction and others it seems tight. I hope when it settles in I will have a better idea of what I can eat without feeling like it is getting stuck. Am I the only one who cant always feel the food pausing at the band? Maybe I just haven't figured out what it really feels like.

I sent an email to Lapdancer, so I hope she responds today to the board.

I can meet pretty much anytime so I vote to get together when Lapdancer and Dee can meet.

I appreciate your feedback. I did call as suggested and they told me that I was more sore since they had to manipulate my liver. Also the swelling did not help. I swear I was bloated like a ballon. The gas issue is just does not help at all. It has been six days since the operation and I feel much better. I just started eating mushy food but the amounts can not be over 2 oz because if it is I just feel like the hiccups are about to start and they are painful. I would be interested in seeing you all at the RR meeting. I don't care what day just pick a day. Maybe we can exchange impressions as I am about to get back to the office and I am not sure what to bring in regards to food.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
