I'm from MA and having surgery in Cambridge. Where are folks here from? Glad to find this group started up, because April will be here before we know it!

I'm from Philly. I will have my surgery at Penn Medicine, nervous excited!! I had my last visit of my 6 month insurance requirement. My coordinator submitted my paperwork yesterday. Now, I'm waiting to hear from the insurance company, which takes approximately 10-15 days. Crossing fingers, surgery date TBD.

Hey there April Sleevers, Where are you? I'm set to have my VS in 2 days and I'm ready!!! It's not the surgery that is bothering me but the journey after... I want to get started and see everyone stories. Let's share our experiences and pull for each other.

Hope some others will join me :)

Hey Adeltaflower! Wow, super exciting! Mine is on 4/22, and I can't wait. I too am more nervous about the 'after' part of the surgery. I've been logging on to VST a lot to read everyone's stories, and I recently joined a wonderful April Sleevers group on Facebook! If any April folks are interested in being added, just private msg VST user: curvymama (Khloe) with your email address, and she'll add you! Best of luck this week :)

Hello April sleevers! I had my surgery 4/23 in Plano, TX. I live in SF bay area. Im excited, nervous, happy, scared. It feels like I'm on a roller coaster. I'm really trying to enjoy the ride. Not used to feeling like I don't know what to expect next.

Hi,

I had my VS on April 4, 2013 and I can now say "I love my sleeve!"

Every day is wonderful and then again not. Right now it’s a day by day process. I'm still trying to find out what works for me as far as scheduling my meals and Snacks. I have found, if I drink something in the AM before I eat Breakfast. It throws everything out of whack. I eat breakfast and have my Protein Drink later in the morning. I'm still not eating that much but I do get my Protein in, fluids intake daily and my Vitamins. This is the most important thing to do for me. I have not really started to exercise. It's on my list of things to do tomorrow. I have lost 60 lbs

This surgery is the best thing I could have done. My mother is 86 and I hope I will be around at least that long. 

Carole

Oh that is fabulous to hear!! Yes, I think I can finally say that "I love my sleeve" too! :) The first month was rough....had to be readmitted to the hospital at 2 weeks out for dehydration and excessive swelling of the sleeve. But then magically at week 4, things got SO much better. These days I'm able to eat 3-5 ounces of protein, and 1/4 - 1/2c of veggies alongside it at meals. Although some days my sleeve is tighter, and I end up doing less. But those days are fewer and farther in between now. It's still a challenge trying to coordinate my meals, snacks, and Fluid just right....but My Fitness Pal is helping me so much with that lately, especially when I pre-plan for the following day. (Doesn't always happen, but ah well!) The other challenge is grocery shopping. I keep having to throw so much out because things go bad! I'm trying to freeze whatever I can though, and that's helping a bit. Sometimes I'm still in awe of that fact that I did the surgery. It's still surreal to me sometimes! Hope everyone is doing well these days, and best wishes. :)

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
