Flights to Mexico

Too bad your not going to Cancun for your surgery. They have about 4 non stops a day from Atlanta.

That's where I went, and it my family had a mini vacation while I was sleeved.

I debated Cancun because it's a far easier trip for me, too, but I found information on Cancun doctors really difficult to find a year ago when I first started researching. Now, I'm excited about my surgeon, so I believe it was meant to work out that way. But I really encourage you to share a TON of info here about your surgeon if you liked him!

I'm going alone. I dread having to squeeze up to a stranger.

I don't blame you. But I dread sitting next to strangers, regardless. I'm very reserved and it just feels like an invasion of personal space.

I think this is one of those instances when the end is worth the means, ya know?

If you can afford it, it might be worth the comfort to have an extra seat. But if it stretches the budget, I wouldn't worry about it. The seats are fine.

Well' date=' I'm 5'7 and 230lbs. I still wear a size 16. The problem is that I have really wide hips, and my husband and I flew Delta to NYC back in January and I had to put the arm rest up because the sides of my hips and upper thighs were pushing into it. I think I might get the extra seat and then even if I don't need it I can luxuriate and nap <img src='http://www.bariatricpal.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':D' />[/quote']

I fly Delta as I'm a loyal Atlantian as well. I opt for first class. I found it to be cheaper than two regular seats. Can't stand my hips on the armrest.

I am not familiar with flying and a little freaked out about going alone. Is it best to purchase 1st class for trip home at time of booking or should I wait and upgrade before departing.

It can be cheaper to upgrade before departing, but you have to look at your flights. What does the seating look like? If its a full flight, standby might bump on and up to 1st. If first is already 1/2 full when you are booking I'd buy the ticket now. I've been on flights where I was the only person in first because I bumped up at the gate, but also had flights where they were paying people to take a later flight. Good luck!!

I used www. Kayak.com which let me see all airlines and layover options... My best bet was surprisingly US Air on the day I purchased, Southwest can be inexpensive also if cost is a factor but Kayak gave many choices

Everything happens for a reason, I believe! When I decided to go to Cancun and use dr. verboonen, I could find very little info on him. That worried me. But, I prayed, felt at peace and jumped on it. I couldn't be happier. I have recommended him, whenever I see people wanting to go to Mexico.

So far the only cheap flights I have found are through southwest. Does anyone else have a website/company that have decent prices?

Thanks, Kat!

Yeah, I'm looking at SW, but it's beginning to look like I'm going to be getting there a day early any way I decide to go. C'est la vie!

I guess this is going to be an adventure :)

Important news to know....(and I didn't!) If you are going to be staying at the Marriott in Tijuana do not schedule a flight that puts you there much before 3PM. My daughter and I arrived shortly before noon and we had to wait 3 hours (after 5 hours fly time and 2 hours of layover time) before we could check into our room!! :(

I got there about 11:30 and got a room. They were just probably booked. I'd let your coordinator know and request early check in. We had to get a inside room with no window but it didnt feel like a tomb like I thought it would. It was very comfortable.

I got my ticket last night through Delta and I could not believe it was $60 cheaper. Yay!!! I guess the waiting paid off. I was so excited about saving money I forgot about being so nervous.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
