I'm 5 weeks post op and had a follow up with my family doctor (I live in Canada so healthcare is free) where she did another X-ray, a full blood panel to check vitamins & nutrients, blood pressure, blood sugar and a pap and I'm in killer health!!! (Yay)

My husband and I have been trying to get pregnant for 6 years with countless fertility treatments and failed IVFs. My doctor said that I'm ready to try again! I'm nervous and excited and just wanted to know others experiences. It's hard because EVERY surgeon is SOOOOO different and everyone from all over the world has different experiences, so I'm just throwing it out there

I am shocked she gave you the go-ahead. For the next several months it is going to be tough to get all your protein and fluids in just to keep you healthy. I can't imagine adding a pregnancy on to that. Of course. because of a surge of estrogen in your body it may be the best time to try if you have had trouble trying to get pregnant. That is tricky. I personally would want to wait a few months- make sure there are no complications around the corner from surgery. Like needing your gallbladder out or problems related to new pouch like leaking, rupture, or ulcers. And what meds are you on post-op?

I totally understand you're excited, and that is so awesome that you're in good health! Is there a way for you to maybe just wait like 6 months? I only say this because at 6 months post-op you will be able to get in more nutrition, which would be better for your baby. Good luck to you! I am hoping a healthy pregnancy is in your future!

Seems a little weird. My dr requires you to sign a form stating you wont try to get pregnant for 1-2yrs after having surgery. The surgeon said a lot of babies conceived so close to have the surgery wind up with defects due to the extreme weight loss and the inability to eat enough to keep the baby healthy. I would think it would be a good idea to get a second opinion and considering waiting at least 6mths before even considering trying.

Yes, most Drs do highly suggest waiting for at least a year.

I would run it past your surgeon and if they give the ok then go for it. Infertility is tougher to deal with than obesity and I think the main reason weight loss surgeons want you to wait is so that you can get the most out of your weight loss. I have never heard of any instances of birth defects caused by VSG or even RNY, as long as your are taking your Vitamins and getting proper nutrition. I know when I pregnant with my 2nd child very closely after my 1st I stayed on a low calorie diet, 1000 per day the entire pregancy so I wouldn't gain any additional weight. She came out perfectly healthy and is turning 31 yrs old this year!

Thanks everyone! I emailed her recommendation to my surgeon this morning and I will wait for their response. I'm feeling awesome and down 35lbs so if the surgeon says wait I will continue with my journey and just enjoy the new life I have! Happy Saturday

Absolutely run this by your surgeon. The big problem is the conflict between minimizing our calories (and with it the nutrition that we need, but can do without for a while,) in order to lose the weight that we need to lose, and properly feeding the little one growing inside (assuming that you can feed yourself enough to feed both at this early stage.) Pregnancies do happen during the loss phase (usually with those who were having fertility problems pre-op and weren't doing anything on the contraception front,) and the best case scenario is that their weight loss gets screwed up in order to ensure a healthy delivery. By all means, continue practicing for the main event (and the practicing just gets more fun as you go along!) but do take precautions to avoid premature joy.

Spoke to my surgeon yesterday and he is completely confident in my primary care physician's assessment and has also cleared me. He wished me all the best! With all the struggles in the past and the fact that I still have irregular periods both feel this is something that won't happen for a few months anyways. My fertility specialist has also checked over my blood panel and is confident that this surgery's end result will be me with a child in my arms. Best decision of my life!

I don't get it. You just had your sleeve surgery 5 weeks ago, presumably to help you lose weight. Why would you now want to throw all that out of the window and get pregnant? Did you pay for your surgery? Why don't you wait at least 6 months, lose some weight and then proceed?

99.9% of surgeons recommend waiting a year to get pregnant. I don't get clearance at 5 weeks. Not at all.

That is absolutely crazy. I don't understand why you went ahead with the surgery. What if you do get pregnant this month. You will not be able to get enough calories in for a healthy pregnancy. Your surgeon sounds very uninvolved. You obviously are only going to hear what you want to hear. So I actually feel sorry for you. I feel bad for anybody that puts their life at risk- and then doesn't give themselves a few months to heal and adjust to the new lifestyle. It is so hard to stay away from the wrong foods as it is. You should not have had this surgery now - if it was so unimportant to you. You will probably be complaining in a a couple years because the surgery didn't work for you. Oy!!

Considering she's already asking her doctor if it's safe to get pregnant it seems like her main goal was to be able to conceive. So if you look at it in that light, the surgery did work for her if she's able to get her hormones back the way they were supposed to be. I don't see why everyone is attacking her, I do think it seems a little risky but regardless it's her body and she got the okay from her doctor so let her do what she feels is right.

Sorry everyone is attacking you! I think (hope) most are just worried about your health. The most important advice you receive is from your doc and surgeon, they know you best, not a bunch of strangers on a chat board! Hang in there, and I pray you have a happy, healthy baby. God bless you.
