Texarkana Bandsters

Recommended Posts

hello all! Haven't been on for a while. All newbies, don't get discouraged. Like lo2us says, it takes a while to figure all this out. Everyone is different. What works for one doesn't always work for the other. Some of this is trial and error. That is why so mayn suggestions have been posted in the earlier part of this thread. Just ask away if you have questions. Someone with a little experience will pop in and answer. I didn't lose a 100 pounds in the first year nor the second, but I know many that have. I am one of those slow but sure losers. Just stick to the rules, which isn't always easy, and the weight will come off. I am hearing a lot of talk about the sleeve, but I haven't learned much about it. I have the band and still do not regret the decision I made to get it. I think there are difficulties with any weight loss surgeries. I just believe this one was the safest for me, as well as many others. Some are more effective and quicker results but come with so many health hazards. I just couldn't go there. Like I said I am not educated on the sleeve.

There is going to be a lapband convention I guess you could call it in Houston (outside of Houston) at a resort, given by dr. Duc Vuong in August. He was at one I went to in Dallas. He is Great! Many of you might enjoy it, I am seriously thinking about going. You can go to his site and read all about it. Take care everyone. keep those pounds comming off. As Lisa would say "Stay in the Box."

There is a Lapband conference outside of Houston Aug.7-8. I have met the doctor that is putting it on. If anyone wants to check out the conference you can go to texascitysurgical.com and check it out. i went to one last year, but I think this one is going to be even better. It will be held at South Shore Harbour, League City, TX. You can look that up online. I have and it looks wonderful. The doc that is heading this up is Dr. Duc Vuong. Anyway just thought I would let all you guys know if you are interested. How about it Julie?

i justed wanted to tell everyone *hi there*.. i have been going back and trying to catch up with everyones posts. had to format and find all again.

i do get discouraged , i try so so hard. i finally got restriction after about my 7th fill. (Dr K gave me) and i lost 10 pds after that, went back 6 wks later and Dr H gave me a small one.

i only lost like 4 pds that six weeks.

well i went in and he says, no you don't need a fill, i think you are using it as a crutch. b/c i told him i use Protein Shakes and stuff. says all they want you to lose it 3 or 4 pds a month. but dang if i eat each meal the weight loss stops. so i gave him the *eye and he knew i was pissed. told me get that scroll off my face :tongue2:.... i was mad but i did what he told me to do. and made myself eat normal food every 4 hours. i go 3 pds down then back up..i go in Monday, its such a long drive for me and i guess i recall back when we did this w/o the band we lost much faster ( only to gain it back when we got off the diets)

i have been noticing and reading some other area's on this site and saw where many traded in there band for the sleeve. they don't have to have all this *getting the fill right. wished i had read more on that first i guess..

i don't mean to sound like a drag. just sharing :(

God bless us all

i am not ungrateful what i have lost..

I am 54, not happy with the results of my band. I lost 40 pounds , counting the pre surgery loss. I have been given to the Dr. helper lady. I'm not happy with her, I pay for the Dr. not the helper. Anyway, last fill she told me 3 months. I am not at any sweet spot. I can not tell the band is there. When the Dr was giving the fills I could tell I had one so this makes me wonder how much this lady is really putting in.

I am staying in the box. Eat 3 small meals a day, drink whey mornings with my coffee. Exercise 7 days a week, 30 minutes a time. Then walk on tred mill for 1 mile.

I am thinking about going back on slim fast a week or so to see if I can make the weight start again.

I am also thinking that if I lose weight on my own for the 3 month period ,without the clinic help ,about not even going back to them at all.

If I do go back and the helper comes in the room. I am going to ask for the Dr. not her, This is my right isn't it

The office told me to request one of the doctors when I checked in for my appointment. I like both doctors, really started with Dr.K, but ended up with Dr. H. I just have more confidence in the doctors when it comes to a fill. Just explain how you feel, be upfront and assertive about how you feel. I don't think they will have a problem with it. This isn't an easy journey for some of us. The band is only a tool for us to use. Many times we don't use it wisely. I know mine doesn't tell me "what" to eat. Sometimes my food choices are not good. Let me change that...make that many times. Old habits are hard to break. I am still plugging along. This is not a fast process for most of us either. Be patient with yourself, hard as that is. I am two years out. Hopefully I can double this loss in the next two years. Losing and keeping it off has been a feat for me. It is slow but sure. Take care and hang in there everyone.

I have asked Debbie (Dr. keilin's nurse) about not seeing the Nurse practitioner. She said sorry, but she has no control over it and that we didn't have a choice. I don't like it at all. The NP is not friendly and she doesn't have a good bedside manner at all. She's never been directly mean to me but she just rubs me the wrong way.

Maybe you've been in there after me. Hopefully they have gotten alot of complaints and realized that the patient has a right to see the DR. I'm definately going to ask for one of the Dr.'s when I go in next because of the twin pregnancy i don't want her poking around my belly (she's never gotten mine on the first try)!!!!

Lo2us, you have less to lose than you have lost. Keep it going, I have always known you could do this. You have been so busy this summer I bet your summer has flown by. Have some fun too.

Absolutely! That is just another victory. When you look at that number and think ooooooohhhh, that's so many to lose! HA! You have already lost more than that! So..YOU GO GIRL!!!!! I think you are right on track. Just stay focussed. I am even going back to Slimfast Optima in the place of at least one meal a day. I think it will help me in the long run. The "long run," is my long term goal. Getting there, are "my short term goals"...every week.

I have signed up for the conference in Houston (well, about 30 miles from there). I am looking forward to it. I need a BOOST every once and a while and I think this will help. I hope someone else is considering going. I will definitely report back on it. There is another in NY in the fall but I am afraid that one is out of my reach. Although I would love to go to NY for a visit. Never been there. Take care everyone.

I have not had a bad experience with the NP. All the doctors are hiring NP's now. I hear the complaints from patients about their respiratory dr, their family dr, so the NP is here to stay. Sorry. I thought she was quiet at first, but talk to her. She is easier to talk to than Dr. H.

She has never fussed at me! Hang in there !

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
