Tips for a new runner?

Recommended Posts

Boo hoo.

I'm too fat to run. Actually, my knee got to hurting and I'm afraid that the excess weight is going to hurt my frame if I run at this size.

So the plan is to see Onederland then give it a shot again.:think

I haven't had the time at the moment to read this entire thread. I have recently started jogging on the treadmill. I really enjoy it because it seems the time goes faster than any or the other cardio machines. Do you think you burn more calories jogging at 4.0 mph than say on an elliptical machine? Thanks!

I'm about 8 weeks post op and still find that my port is very tender during jogging. Has anyone found a solution? I've been considering binding myself around the middle - including the port to prevent the jarring. Sure would appreciate some feedback. Thank you

Good for you. I started running on a tread mill for 1 minute. That is all I could muster. Yesterday I did a 45 minute 4 mile run. I will tell you the weight falls off when you start running. I started by walking and using the elliptical trainer at the gym. That is good for building strength and lung capacity.

Keep on moving!!!!

I too have just started running. I was one of those people who always said "I would like to run" when I lost enough weight. Well I have been doing the elliptical for a year now and can do an hour on that very easily now and after checking out that website listed above, I read that over and said - HEY I CAN do this! Last night was my first time. I thought about dying several times over, sweated profusely but I finished it and it felt good. I didnt die. I was able to get through the entire 20 minutes and I actually feel pretty good today. I was worried that I would be sore but i went to the gym this afternoon and did my regular elliptical work out and was fine. My thighs are a bit tight this evening but nothing really even to complain about. I am excited! I think I too may be able to run.... WHO KNEW!

1 quick question for you guys... when you do the 90 second walking how fast do you make your pace for that? I was doing a 3.5 speed which is brisk pace for me.

I run very slowly since I am bigger. I run between 3.6-3.8 mph and I walk at 3.0 mph. Right now I am working on running 30 minutes then I am going to worry about speed. If you are comfortable and able to do the running workouts with your walking at 3.5mph then that should be a fine pace.

I think your approach with the elliptical is correct. That is how I started. I then moved to walking...not strolling. I actually bought walking stciks to aid in balance and they added to the upper body workout as well. Start walking...your body will tell you how much to do. I was up to 7 miles at a good clip. I did 4 miles last night. It took me almost 55 minutes...but I did it. Just kept moving.

I started running becuasse my wife started running after many years of not running. now that the kids are older it is eaier on both our scheudles to find more time. I did find that although food consumption is 90% of weight loss, and exercise represents the other 10%, the running really began to peel the pounds away.

Secondly, I am hoping that it excellaertes my loss as my wife finds me unattractive and unappealing.( She should not leave e-mails open where others can read them. It broke my heart. BUT I am doing the running for me and me only. Good luck. Make sure you investi n good shoes. Go to a running store and get fitted. It is worth the extra you will pay.

good luck bostongurl!

I am right around your weight as well. Even though I a ma guy, it does not matter when it comes to strength and exercise. I was doing that also. After you start walking and running outside, it is tough to get back on a treadmill. They actually hurt my hips. I starterd at 3.5 to 3.8. I am now up to 5.3.

Keep on movin....

Don, how horrible of your wife to say (write) something like that. I hope some hot ladies start flirting with you just to make her jealous.

You can actually feel the less amount of fat when you run. I felt the greatest loss on my hips when I ran. I did 4 miles Tuesday night and will try to do 4 miles again this evening. Interesting comment from my wife. After 26 years of marriage that hurt. She said in her e-mail to her frineds tht she still loves me and overlooks my wieght. There are some comments you never verbalize or document. Thinking it is one thing.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
