Did you keep your surgery a secret?

Recommended Posts

I told my husband, family, and co-workers. That's about it. It's not a secret, though, and I don't really care who knows. I am happy to have made this decision that will help me to regain control of my life.

Fiddleman, you are right indeed. Things have to change What I love about the VS is that it becomes a built-ini "babysitter" for me. You can't do the wrong thing.

newat52, I agree being private with no strings" seems to be too much to ask these days. It's amazing how much different the world looks already

I think that's great tannak! that must be tough, living with a bad thing that happened in your family in a completely different time. It's amazing how conclusions are drawn with misinformation or partial information. I am SO glad you have a close support person. That is the BEST!

Lifer, I totally understand. There;s a real "disconnect" with people sometimes on this issue when they know nothing about it, so not saying anything certainly makes it easier.

I told everyone when I was banded 10 years ago, and this time around, it's pretty easy since they already all know that I still have that band in. I am telling everyone (well, family and friends and old coworkers since I no longer work) that I am getting my WLS revised or fixed (for lack of a longer or more detailed explanation). I would imagine if I was working new coworkers would know about my band too since I tell new people about it too... So it would probably be the same thing if I was working.

I have failed at WLS once, and THAT was hell. It was torture and I do not want to go down that road again. I am commuting to this 100% and I can use all the support I can get. I know that there is a stigma about it and I know that some people don't agree. The same people the didn't agree before, have watched me fail and think I'm just compounding my mistakes. I am really hoping that this will be the answer for me and that they will be able to be happy for my success, but honestly, it doesn't matter. I am doing what I need to do for me. And I don't care what they think enough to try and hide it from anyone. The people that support me are wonderful and that's what's going to pull me through this and help me really succeed!!! :)

My MIL I am sure doesn't think I deserve it bc I took the "easy way out" but in reality my MIL is the one taking the easy out by just staying fat.

This is such a great point. While I feel that everyone truly has their own journey and I won't judge anyone else for any route they take to get healthier (or not), I SO agree that the easy way out for me would have been to not make a change.

I think you're right that we are making a hard choice and that this is by no means an easy way out. But we need to be careful of judging others the same way we hate being judged. For some people the risk of surgery is just not something they're willing to do, and we have to respect that. This journey is a serious decision and it isn't for everyone. We have to try to remember that the people that are overweight, even those that openly judge our decision are battling the same things we are, and none of it is easy.

Hi all. I'm new here to the forum. I'm just graduated the Tufts "Can Change" program and am finally finding out my surgery date on the 7th. I'm so excited! I was wondering how many of you kept your surgery a secret? So far I've told my family' date=' my very best friend and my boyfriend. I was just wondering how others handled their situation.

Thanks in advance! :D[/quote']

I told family and friends everyone was positive expect one or two but who care long as my husband support me I'm not worried not one bit

Yes, that is the point I was trying to make in saying that "for me," the "easy way out" would have been to not make a change--and I added that I don't judge anyone for any route they choose to take or not take to get healthier. I absolutely agree with your points--one size does not fit all.

Totally TES :) I realized immediately after I posted that, that I should have quoted who you quoted and not you since it made it look like I might have been countering your point instead of backing it! Lol I agree with you completely!!!

I just told my husband and close friend. Wasn't planing on telling anyone just my husband but a week before my surgery my friend called me...she was having one of those "I can't believe I let myself get like this" day. I decided on telling her. Now she will be getting her surgery 2 weeks after me.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
