Just as most people nowadays don't think of the Germans, Jews or such when using the term "Nazi", to them it refers to a harshly domineering, dictatorial, or intolerant person. Take things with a grain of salt.

Thank you. Again - I'm a second generation American. I am not removed from the horrors of the Holocaust and our family lost entire branches of the tree because only a fraction of the family in Poland was able to flee prior to the start of WWII. My other grandmother spoke two languages my entire childhood: Russian and Yiddish.

So please, I've already apologized for using a term that's offensive to some. But frankly, the entire way this thread that started as a way to say "Hey, to each his own and let's not judge everyone" has completely disintegrated into an argument is more offensive.

I swear that my five year old twins communicate more effectively than most of the adults on this forum.

ok I guess the arguments go on in here too.. I thought this was a place for all to ask questions and post their concerns.. I probably wont be coming back.. I try to avoid all negativity. Everyone is different. We all have our cheats and weakness. Im no different.. will I cheat and eat the oh so horrible fast food? I know ive become anal about reading labels thats for sure.. I got the sleeve as a tool. I know it will take me working with the sleeve to achieve success. I dont plan on failing. I post comments on some to tell them of my experience. or if I have found something that worked for me maybe it will work for them.. thats all.. not to dog on anyone for eating something they should or shouldnt have.. this site is here to help people not berate them or make them feel bad.. being obese has already done that to us. This is a new time for most of us.. lets all make the best of it. be positive.. but I may not come back .. I dont know yet.. too many lashings.. not enough support. but anyways.. to each his own im sure.

What I like to know is mason at all a person who had surgery? Does he have weight issues? I really don't care how many degrees or if you have a phd. You don't know the experience of all people with weight issues unless you walk in their shoes. Everyone who is fat are not fat because they have mental issues.

I posted that I ate half a Big Mac and still eat a crispy creme donut if I crave one. Several people gave their opinions.and how I didnt care about my health.....but several more sent me private messages' date=' 11 different people to be exact, that wanted some advice because they had kids and the grazing and snacking was getting the best of them, but were scard to ask for it on this forum because of the tongue lashing some people give when your veer from the HEALTHY path. Everyone is not the same, our needs, wants and lifestyles are different. There are people reading the forum who are intimidated by your perfection....give us who arent as perfect a break.[/quote']

Ok so I agree with the OP though I may not make some of the same food choices. What I don't understand is what is there to argue about?I have seen the lashings that take place when someone says "I ate a Kit-kat" now granted no one has to be supportive about these kinds of choices but we certainly don't have to verbally abuse these people either.I think most people think they are truly being helpful when they respond this way to these kinds of statements but some in reality are being hurtful.I think there is a way to give these people helpful guidance without being offensive and definitely without name calling.I am not calling anyone out for always being mean because no one person stands out in my mind as being so.I just think we all could do a little better at reading what we write and seeing how someone new or someone who is truly in need of help may view it. I find myself frequently ignoring "cheeseburger "threads bc I know that I can't say what I think using tact.

It's a real shame that many of the posts on this board are cluttered with all the drama. There are a bunch of really informative and helpful remarks in this topic alone however it took me darn near an hour to pluck them out of all the other crap.

Not wanting to keep the Nazi thing going but I've heard it used in other context such as "breastfeeding nazi". I don't use the term but I never associated it with the holocaust but maybe this is a generational thing since I'm 28 yrs old and born long after the holocaust. I also play a lot of video games and I've heard every racial slur out there and over the years I've become used to them. Most people are surprised to learn that I'm Jewish because I'm half black and cuban lol. I do think OP topic has morphed into a huge deflection over the use of the word "nazi". *shrugs* I actually agreed with a lot of what Mason had to stay and I hope he or she stays around longer :)

See' date=' you sound like a smart person and a medical health professional, but still YOU are the purveyor of this sleeve nazi rhetoric and it's you that is being offensive. But when I call you out and challenge you to tell me if I'm a sleeve nazi or not, you shrivel up in cowardice. You and the rest of the folks who throw out offensive characterizations as a group don't have the guts to pin that label on anyone specific. You're all a bunch of cowards. It amazes me the lengths people will go to when they feel their donut is being taken away.

This calling people out and issuing a challenge is just childish. Mason was considerate in his/her response. This post is unnecessary and just itching for a flame war. I enjoy your posts in general but this its just unnecessary.

Consequently, as a rule—that is, on the average—abstinence is far less effective in maintaining weight loss than moderation. Insulting me doesn't change the validity of what I've written or serve as scientific evidence in favor of abstinence.

The studies also say that I should have expected to lose 60% of my excess weight. Well here I am at 90%

I really don't give a damn about this study or that study.

The truth of the matter is that a few bites of a Big Mac are probably not going to do irreparable harm, but why would you do it? It's crap food. This is what's in the bun alone. Why would I want to put this in my body? I used to love Big Macs, but now I usually do not eat foods with more than 4 or 5 ingredients.

Big Mac® Bun:

-- Enriched flour (bleached wheat flour, malted barley flour, niacin, reduced Iron, thiamin mononitrate, riboflavin, folic acid, enzymes)

-- Water

-- high fructose corn syrup

-- sugar

-- soybean oil and/or partially hydrogenated soybean oil

The bun also contains 2% or less of the following:

-- salt

-- Calcium sulfate

-- calcium carbonate

-- wheat gluten

-- ammonium sulfate

-- ammonium chloride

-- sodium stearoyl lactylate *

-- datem *

-- ascorbic acid*

-- azodicarbonamide*

-- mono- and diglycerides*

-- ethoxylated monoglycerides*

-- monocalcium phosphate*

-- enzymes*

-- guar gum*

-- calcium peroxide*

-- soy flour*

-- calcium propionate (preservative)

-- sodium propionate (preservative)

-- soy lecithin

-- sesame seed.

My surgeon's stats also say 60% ...but I still question 60% of what?

Excess weight by what measure?

My surgeon's office says that my goal is 128 lbs and anything above that is excess weight.

My BMI chart says 115 lbs as an average for weight for my height so excess weight is about that.

What number are we using to determine "excess weight?"

By my surgeon's office, if I get to 128 lbs I will have lost 100% of excess weight.

By my goal, I won't have lost 100% of excess weight until I get to 115 lb.s

I talked with him about this during my follow up visit this week.

He asked how I would feel if I lost and maintained at 140lbs, which is neither my goal weight for myself nor his goal weight for me. If this is their 60% weight loss, would I be ok based on their statistics.

I told him I would then be a very fabulous 140lb woman.

% of excess weight is based on what exact number? That baseline is from what? That is where those stats come from.

But of course since I use the abstinence model as a way to stay healthy then I have a mental health problem and will most probably fail according to the academic elitists.

Delta Girl: I take it to mean 60% of the weight above what is your optimum weight. You surgeon will base his stats on the goal he gave you. My surgeon set mine WAY too low. Mine was set at 110. that would have me wearing a size 0 or kids clothes.

I ain't going there. 130 is well within the normal BMI for me. Take 10 pounds of skin from the panni and I will be 120. Still maybe too skinny. We shall see.

That is my philosophy. Right now at 161 lbs I have no idea what I will look nor feel like at 128 lbs or 115 lbs. When I get further along I think it will get a lot more clear. I'm not a young chicken, so being 44 years old, perhaps 115 is not reasonable. I'm willing to be open minded about it and see what happens over time.

Nothing wrong with saying you'd rather not eat this crap again (like me). Lots of fit, healthy people who have no problem maintaining their weight don't eat it.

Nothing wrong with saying you're going to have this stuff on occasion. Lots of fit, healthy people who have no problem maintaining their weight eat it occasionally.

Hey - is this a resolution????? :) :)

Peace out,

Deano

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
