80 pounds gone forever and always :)

Recommended Posts

I had surgery on Sept 14th, 2012. I did it for many reasons, but the main was that in June my mother passed away. She was 55, 2 days short of her 56th birthday. She was extremely overweight and if she hadn't been then more than likely I would still have my mother today. My whole family battles weight. I have been overweight from the day I was born! I decided that I did not want to lose my life over something like my weight. I made the decision to have the surgery. I have a very smooth surgery. I had surgery at 11 am on a Friday and was discharged by noon on Saturday the very next day. My recovery was easy, no complications other than pain and some ankle swelling that I was given Water pills for. I took 4 weeks off work, although I could have gone back sooner I took the time to heal and really get acquainted with my new lifestyle. I have an amazing support system of my friends, my family, and my wonderful husband. Although my husband can not relate ( he is 157 pounds and very fit) he has never once made me feel like I could not do this. He loves me for me whatever I look like and knew that this was something that I needed to do not only for me, but for our future family. At the time of surgery we were getting ready to Celebrate our one year wedding anniversary, so timing wasn't the best, but then again when is ever going to be the best time to take control over your life other than now??

So 3 /12 months later I could not be happier with my results. I have lost 80.4 pounds since the day of surgery. While I still have another 130 some to go, I know that this surgery not only changed my life but saved it. For the first time in my life I love myself and who I am becoming. If that isn't a great result from this surgery, then I don't know what would be :) I attached some pics from the day of and then taken yesterday. I can not believe how far I have come in so little time, and this is just the beginning!!

Carly, I am so sorry to hear about your mother, but I am glad you were spurred on to do something about your health. I had a very similar experience, but it took me a bit longer to decide on WLS. My dad was about 450 pounds my entire life (I remember his waist was over 60 inches). He died in 2003 much sooner than he needed to after having a very limited life because of his weight. I had a lot of anger and issues to work out, and it really helped me to write about them.

I had my WLS in 2011. I spent a lot of time relearning things about what I thought was normal and what is normal (things like portions). I miss my dad every day, but I am also glad that my experience helped me make the choice that will now allow me to be here for my family for decades to come. :)

Thank you :) I miss my mom so much everyday, it's only been 7 months so its still fresh. I always thought about doing it but never did it. In a way my mom pushed me to do it when we lost her, she just doesn't know it. It's sad to think that it took losing my mom to realize what I needed to do. I don't regret anything, I just wish my mom would have thought of something like this. But I know that I can't think of all the what ifs and just focus on what I can do :) I'm sorry to hear about your dad, I feel that no matter how long ago we lost a parent, the hurt still feels the same as the day they left us. I still have my dad, his health isn't the greatest, but not because of his weight. He has been heartbroken from losing my mom. But he is so proud of me and what I am doing and that is one of the best feelings in the world.

Hi

First off sorry for your loss, I know how hard it is .... So we totally have similar circumstances , I lost my mom due to cancer a few years back but when she was at her worst we could not care for her due to her weight issues , she ended up in a nursing home because Hospice didnt have any room for her at the time. She ended her days in a nursing home, while someone was there 24/7 I wish I could of made her happy and brought her home with us. Seeing the struggle she went through not being able to walk / or being able to have someone lift her for everyday necessary functions lit a fire in me. It took a few years for me to save up the money to have this surgery ( my insurance doesnt cover it ) ... I had surgery 9-6-12 so right before you and I have also lost 80 lbs.

just like you said we have come so far and this is only the beginning!! We can do this !!!

Thank you so much. It is tough when you feel helpless with a parent, you don't want to see them suffer but there isn't anything you can do to take that away from them. I am sorry for your loss as well.

We are similar in many ways, our starting weight and goal is almost the same, I started out about 30 pounds heavier than you.. I love finding people who started around me surgery wise and weight wise :)

I lost my Mom a week after my surgery. My sleeve-anniversary is tomorrow. She was ill but it was unexpected. She was 58. She was not heavy, and did not know I had the surgery (I was trying not to worry her).

I wish she could see the changes. I guess she can, actually.

Your pictures are wonderful. What an amazing change you can already see!!!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
