Glucophage or Metformin

Recommended Posts

Is anyone here taking Glucophage or Metformin after being banded? I've been diagnosed with Insulin Resistance and am considering going back on it to even out my hormone levels but am concerned that with them being horse pills they will be impossible to get down...any thoughts?

I take metformin. I usually break them in half and take it with a warm drink. I wait 15 minutes before I take the second half. They both go down without any problem. I'm pretty restricted in the morning especially. They only go down if I take them with a warm or hot drink, cold or room temp just doesn't work.

I hope this helps!

I was taking Glucophage XR prior to banding. Anthing with XR, SR etx should not be broken, crushed etc. They are slow release meds. I had to get a new script for the "regular" kind so I could break them up and now have to take it 2x a day instead of once.

Sometimes I feel like the jagged edges on a broken tab scratches on the way down! So I make a slurry of meds in a little cup and toss them back like a shot ! I then follow with a big glass of Water. I have to do this on an empty stomach so meds don't "return"

Hopefully I can quit taking it altogether soon, at 43 I am not worried about trying to get pregnant!

Always crush your pills so you don't risk them getting hung. Pill crushers are cheap at any pharmacy (walmart, cvs, etc.) surgery to have a stuck pill removed is costly. My doctor said it was ok to crush my metformin xr it just becomes regular instead of extended release. After banding the dosage may change. Good luck.

I take Ambertose it is a powder that helps lower blood suger.I can take it along with my meds. Metformin tears my stomach up BAD.I can eat and five min later I am on the pot.My colen feels like it has a brick in it and I wake up everynight at about 3am in pain. Just cant take Metformin.I whis I could it keeps the weight down but I think it is because you poop so much.

I have insulin resistance and take 30mg of Actos. They are really small, so no problem there....possible side effect is weight gain however. I asked my doctor for Metformin, but he wants me on the Actos because it helps chlosterol. I agree on just crushing them, it is only bad tasting for a minute!

My doctor told me to crush metformin

He refuses to give me glucaphage (I think cuz it leads to weight gain??) the pill is much smaller and thats what i want, I HATE crushing pills

and honestly.. I just stopped taking them at all.. and I have been fine.

(NOT that a reccomend that)

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
