Revisionista Alert - Long Term Results

Recommended Posts

I have never seen a study that shows how band to sleeve revisions do over the long run. My surgeon felt they did okay - but results are variable. I saw a bariatric doctor today who does primary care and when I met with her presurgery - she was seeing excellent results in her own practice. The vast majority doing well, at that time she had perhaps one revision patient who wasn't doing well (hooked on ice cream and all day snacking).

Well, a year later, she is telling me that she is seeing trouble in paradise. Her patients that were "virgin" sleevers are doing great, but she is seeing regains and losses stopping for revisionistas.

she doesn't know why, just has theories that the band teaches you bad habits - slider foods, but she doesn't really know that for sure.

Anyway, I am feeling great right now, but i take seriously this "concern" and I am feeling like I am on notice to keep following the sleever rules!!!!

Just want to say this is just in her practice. You are right we all need to follow the rules to be successful. Just because I know what slider foods are it doesn't mean that I have to eat them. Actually for me it is quite the opposite. For 5 years not being able to eat chicken, yogurt veggies I am now so thrilled to be eating normally I want to contine this way for a very, very long time.

Good to know though, good to know.

After my revision surgery, Dr. Elmo (assistant to Dr. Rod, my mexican band doctor and revision doctor) spoke to me about the bad habits acquired with the lap band. I am still on mushies at this point (3 weeks) and I really haven't had a strong desire to go back to the bad habits. I have tried some ice cream (last night) from Sonic as I was dying for something sweet. Well, I had just a little bit of a sundae and that was it. I could not tolerate anymore. It was enough to satisfy a craving but it seems that body does not really want too much of a rich thing. I'm happy to report that as of today, my weightloss has been about 17.5 lbs. since my surgery 3 weeks ago today. I went this past week without losing anything and after reading a post on here about the 3 week stall, I relaxed a bit, and today .5 was gone! I may need to add a Protein shake every day or something as I really don't think I'm eating enough but I'm not that hungry. I'm satsified with very little. This a.m. had some cottage cheese and a bit of Protein Jello mixed with it. Been trying to walk daily and be more active.

I think we are all different and must look at the sleeve as a new start. I am so happy that I will not have trouble with chicken or vegetables anymore like Amazon 13 posted. I got frustrated with my band (even empty I had restriction depending on weather, tom, time of year, stress) and was tired of throwing up. So, I would eat a lot of ice cream, shakes and just plain JUNK. I had to really do some soul searching as in a few months I had gained 25 lbs. due to eating out of depression, etc. I am seeking out a good counselor and ready to get to my goal in the next year. The band failed me, but I also failed the band in some ways, too. I paid out of pocket, traveled back to Mexico to have the band out and do the sleeve. Failure is NOT an option. But, it will be my choices that lead to success!

Very interesting.

I'm only 3 weeks out (and gaining! ugh!), but I can see where sliders could be an issue. However, I would also guess that virgin sleevers will figure out sliders after a while as well, so I would guess the *really* long-term results would be similar if this is the main issue.

Having paid out of pocket for a lap-band, lap-band out, and now a sleeve, I have to make this work. Have to. I am doing everything I can to make it work -therapy, support groups, tracking, etc. I was a "success" with the band, despite the slip, and I know I can be again.

I really appreciate the heads' up and it just makes me even more determined to be a success story!

You make an excellent point. Maybe year 2 revision sleevers are similiar results to say year 3 or 4 "virgin sleevers". statistically, WLS patients regain some of their lost weight over the years. That doesn't mean it has to happen to me or you though! Many people keep the weight off - I plan to keep working the sleeve it has helped me lose 130# so far - I am a believer!!!

Even so, I think learning from those that go before us is smart. I would love to see any actual studies on outcomes for revisions - has anybody seen any?

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
