Would You Get The Sleeve Again? If So, Why? If No, Why? Would You Change Anything?

Recommended Posts

That's exactly how I felt holly! Reading all the posts of people shopping after surgery, driving, going for walks, even going back to work- People who had no pain at all- wasn't really preparing myself to not heal like that. I woke with pain and was like 'what?' I think it's important to NOT compare yourself to others. Your right this journey- recovery, weight loss etc its such a personal thing. Comparing ourselves to other sets us up for disaster.

So glad to hear your list of pros has gone up! I know I'll get there too eventually!

No.... I will not... Despite I had a great recovery... And Ive lost 30 pounds on 33 days... I will nit do it again... This is about your effort not the surgery.... I am hungry ... I cant take some Vitamins cuz i feel nausea... Really I am not having any problems... But I understood all is about my own effort... i was on diet before surgery and I lost 43 pounds for my own in 5 mo... I could continue losing weight that way

Somethings not right so you better readdress yourself. Trust me. Once you find your grove you will be fine. QUIT EATING HARD VITAMINS!!!! Get liquid Vitamins or gelcaps. You will feel much better. Doctors dont know everything.

If your not losing weight everyone knows what the problem is lol

I am less than 24 hours post op right now i am in my hospital bed and yes when i woke up it was very uncomfortable. But once I a got a good dose of pain Meds I feel fine. Just a little pressure and abdominal spasms here and there. The worst parts so far was the hotel and some of the guest's were really loud and trying to go to sleep here in the hospital is a joke cause the nurses are loud as hell too but I really hope it just stays at this level for me. Good luck to you all.

It wasn't worth the risks and the pain. I would never do it again and will likely always feel great guilt about having done it.

You could never have known what was to happen..you are not selfish..you were just trying to do something good for yourself..I can understand when you talk about your little one

If I had your story ..or it happened to me..I wouldn't do it again either..I'm so happy you are ok..especially for that little one..but the guilt makes it hard..youbcoildnr have known.

I reached my half way point today and I am sooo happy with my sleeve!! One thing you need to realize is that the first couple of months after the surgery are not easy. Even if everything goes without a hitch and you don't have a single complication, the beginning is very challenging. As long as you have realistic expectations about this you will be fine. When someone says they regret the surgery, you want to find out how far out they are. If they are less than three months out, they are still in the rough patch so their perspective is not the same as someone who is further out from surgery. That being said, there are always risks. Poor iggychic is an example of how bad it can be. I definitely would not have wanted to go through half of what she has had to endure throughout this process. Either way, we are all here for you..good, bad, and ugly!!

I am sure, like me and a lot of others, you could lose weight without your sleeve -but it's the lifetime of keeping the weight off that's been my challenge! Example - Feb. 2010 I joined Jenny Craig at 272 pounds. By December, I lost almost 70 pounds. A coworker had WLS also in Feb. 2010. She lost a little more than me by Dec. -say, 90 pounds. (Meanwhile I was working out 5x a week and spending an average of $350 a month on Jenny). A year and a half later - I weighed 278 and she lost over 150 pounds and is a tiny little woman now! I was so embarrassed and ashamed to yet again put the weight back on that I worked so hard to lose! First I plateaued on Jenny-normal, then I had a bunion pressing into a nerve so I had surgery last Feb. Once I stopped working out and eating too many cals/carbs again, I was a gonner! So, I called the Bariatric center my coworker (and several others) had and here I am. Did I expect it to be as hard as it is? No way! Is it a walk in the park? No! Will I lose the 100+ pounds once and for all-yes! Will it take hard work-yes, anything worth getting does! I am keep positive images of what I'm going to look and feel like when I make my goal in my mind and know that what a difference a year makes..2013 will be a great year!!

wow 175 lost how long did that take congrats what a great accomplishment il almost 2 months out just got cleared to exercise i hope that changes the weight loss speed did adding exercise work for u

It took about 10 months to lose 150 pounds, the last 25 came off over the next 6 months and I've been holding stead since. I never made it to my original goal and realized that my goal was unreasonable. I've always been one to be a bit heavier than what I looked. Most people guess my weight at 180-190 whereas I weight 200-205. I'm happy and can hold this weight so I count it as a success.

A few in this post, and other threads like it, mention that they would NOT do it again. Please don't take this as trying to diminish their negative experience or deny your regrets but for the VAST majority of people who get WLS, especially the sleeve, IT WORKS. In my case, it worked very well, in others not so well and for still others a complete failure. It's bound to happen, we are all different and react differently. Unfortunately there is no crystal ball that allows you to see your outcome before you have the surgery.

I've had Lasik surgery to my eyes and bunion surgery to me feet, both which worked out well too, and yet I have heard of a few that have lost their vision after Lasik and lost part of their foot due to complications after bunion surgery. I also know a woman who's daughter went in for common wisdom tooth extraction and got an infection, it hit her heart and in a matter of days she died. S#!T HAPPENS.

Think of the people who won the lottery and lost all the money as well as their marriages and family. Bad things just happen sometimes.

Weigh the pros and cons, consult those in whom you trust and decide for yourself. It can be a miracle, or it can be a curse, the odds are in your favor but there is a risk - as well as there being a risk with remaining obese and contracting any number of conditions form it too.

Actually, though I know I wouldn't do it again, and I always pipe up with that comment...you would never hear me say it does not work. I think it works for just about everyone who has done it. That can't be denied.

For me its just a measure of risk verses rewards and on that scale, FOR ME it was not worth it :) But it still works.

I do think that Iggy makes excellent points - the risk really needs to be worth it for your personal situation.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
