I am 3 weeks post op and, as of today, I would not do it again. I have only lost 5 lbs. Although a lot of people on this board claim that the surgery diminishes hunger, my hunger isn't the least bit diminished. I wasn't able to eat much for the first couple of weeks but now that I am done with my pain medication, I am famished most of the time. The only thing that the surgery has done for me is decreased the amount of food that I can eat but, considering that I have only lost 5 lbs, I don't consider the surgery to have yet been worth the trouble. I'm just glad that the surgery was free for me because I would probably be a lot more upset about having it if I had spent a great deal of money on something that has only led to a 5 lb weight loss. I could have done that without surgery!

Yes I would do it again. Usually I make utterly wrong "big life" decisions but getting the VSG was a correct choice. The only problem is that I haven't had a chance to really enjoy it because just a few months after my surgery I was diagnosed with uterine carcinsarcoma. I've been spending all (and I mean ALL) my energy getting through the hyterectomy, chemo, and radiation. I'm hoping some time this coming February I can start really enjoying my weight loss and maybe even start exercising.

In different ways Spatter my dear...you've been through the wringer as well. I hope you are able to really enjoy your changing world because it's focused on weight loss, verses focused on fighting for your life. A close friend of mine is battling leukemia. She's a rock...and having never faced a major health battle before this, I felt like I would have the strength to fight as she does. Then I went through it....and what I dealt with is nothing in comparison to chemo etc. I have held her hand many a time and she has held mine :) but she taught me many a lesson about fighting. I did 20 days and it literally broke me...she's been doing this for over nine years! I'm not worthy! You...get better please :) So you can enjoy your new little tummy!

Sansa, I'm sorry you are having such a hard time. I gained a significant amount of weight right after surgery so my weight loss looks smaller because I went up so high afterwards. Between the IVS and the swelling in your abdomen and stomach area, it sometimes seems like you are sort of doing this without any benefit. (Did that make sense). Anyhoo, what I am trying to say is that I am hoping that given a couple more weeks you might see some dramatic losses because you're just one of those people who holds onto swelling and it's associated weight longer than others. :) I hope you see some benefit soon!

I have a feeling you will continue to lose, and in the end, lose a great deal more than 5 lbs. Give it time. You have barely had surgery.

AS far as hunger goes, are you on an acid blocker. Acid can feel exactly like hunger pains.

I would do it again in a heart beat. i traveled to Mexicali by myself, and was taken care of by a superior team of doctors and nurses who visited me several times a day, and was given 3 leak tests before leaving their beautiful hospital. I went back to work as soon as I got home.

I would definately have it done again. I know a person who has had complications, but I have had none. I am almost 4 most post op (23rd nov) I have lost 37kg (80 pounds). I can eat everything, but try and eat only Protein. I have a 3yo and have been trying for a 2nd for 2 years, I am hoping to start trying in the new year. I still have about 38 kgs to goal. (81 pounds) but I was about this size when I fel pregnant with my son. Which is 118kg (260 pound). Good luck with your op. so worth it.

I would do it again and again and again.

People that know me are just stunned at my transformation. I am just happy to be normal and fit in my car, fair rides, boots, clothes from when I was 17. <really lol. I am only 9 months out TODAY and I feel excellent. I can eat whatever but I dont. Never ate rice or pastas yet. I just refuse to.

One scare I had. One day in band camp.... Nah just one day I was eating a prune and it had the damn seed in it. Now right after I thought about what would happen if I swallowed that sucker I swallowed that thing without even thinking. I automatically went grab a bottle of h2o and commenced to throwing up. It didnt come up and I was scared to death. I was nervous for 2 days. After day 2 I said I guess I am clear. But till this day no more prunes with seeds. Hahaha

Just a thought

It wasn't worth the risks and the pain. I would never do it again and will likely always feel great guilt about having done it.

Why do you say that?

I'm guessing you posted that before reading the rest of the posts where I posted a long novel :P about my complications? If not, go back to page one and look for the novel... :)

It's too soon to tell honestly. I'm only 5 days post op. I had regrets the first two days. Now I don't but ill have to wait and see how worth it it is. I had a rough first few days ( though NO WHERE as hard as some others- iggy looking at you here. Your a trooper!) I still have pain and there is bad pulling in one of my incisions. i guess I read people's stories who were up and raring to go in a day, no pain no anything, did laps around the nurses station day one and I guess I kind of expected that. But didn't work that way. I couldn't even move the first day. Didn't really get up and walk until day 3 and still can't really walk around with out horrible abdominal pain. So it wasn't the light recovery I was expecting, but I DO feel it WILL be worth it for me. At my weight my quality of life was extremely poor anyway so this was a last reaort for sure.

All I'm saying is don't expect the best outcome so you can be prepared. Expect problems this way you can prepare yourself fully. And if you DO have the easiest recovery then great! But you'll be prepared of anything if your not going into it expecting an easy time.

I am 5 weeks out and I can honestly say, it was -IS-the hardest thing I've ever done in my life! I haven't had life-threatening complications like some others have, but everyone's revovery and weight loss is different. Before my surgery, I don't think I expected any pain after reading posts about people shopping etc. just days after surgery. When I had pain and difficulty (nothing unusual) I was scared thinking that something was wrong. As I heal and can eat a little more than the week before, I still feel a liitle bit of "what the heck have I done to myself?" but I no longer snore-sleep apnea is going away, I was Pre-diabetic-Now I'm not; and I had one of 3 hernias (that I didn't know I even had!) repaired, and I've lost 49 pounds since August. Every day I weigh the pros and cons and every day there are mire "pros"! I feel a weird "hunger" but can go a long time without eating (eventhough I shouldn't!), but I can. Before surgery I was so obsessed with food I barely went an hour without eating something -was always starving!

Just be educated on pros and cons and how they could affect your life. Good luck!

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
