Caffeine - Stronger Effects After Surgery?

Recommended Posts

I've always been a coffee/espresso drinker and had to give it up obviously for a short time after surgery. I started a 3rd shift job the week after surgery and have been gradually falling back to the caffeine boost. The difference now is I only drink 1 small latte or coffee vs. the Large and or multiple cups I drank previously, however, the effects seem to be amplified now which is weird to me. Trouble sleeping, feeling jittery, etc... I've heard that the absorption with alcohol is different after surgery (feeling tipsy faster) so I'm wondering if it's the same as caffeine. Anyone heard or experienced something similar?

I'm glad you asked this question! I'm 3 weeks post op tomorrow and yesterday I just had to have a small cup of coffee with French vanilla Creamer-we had no electric and I have a house full of relatives evacuated from their home due to hurricane! First, like everything else since surgery, it didn't taste 'right' and second, I could feel the caffein working almost immediately so I stopped drinking. I had 1/4 cup at most. I was afraid it would upset my little baby tummy, it didn't then, but I don't feel great this morning--almost feel hung over- weird!

I am another coffee drinker ( previously) but after the surgery coffee doesn't feel good for me either. it is too strong , too bitter.

and I only can handle 3-4 oz. and I started with 2 . the only time when I can have my coffee if I am eating the Protein bar. then it is ok. but again 3-4 oz.

about the tummy... I just know that we need to drink more Water because coffee can dehydrate your body.

I tried coffee a few weeks out and it didn't taste right. I had it again while on vacation. Now I am having 1 cup when I get up in the morning (which is all I was drinking in the first place). I already have a problem getting all of my Water in. In fact, that is my biggest weakness. Now I am in a huge stall and it is very frustrating. I don't know if there is some effect from the coffee with not enough water that is contributing to it (probably).

I drink a lot less coffee now, because one cup is plenty. More than two and I feel jittery and uncomfortable. If I have coffee after noon, I'll have trouble sleeping. These are new issues post op. I also feel like I was more sensitive to caffeine in the beginning because I avoided it for several weeks post op while on my strict liquid diet.

I still start my day with a coffee Protein shake (though I can't do that now that I'm pregnant; I'm even MORE sensitive to caffeine right now) and find that I enjoy my morning coffee but I can only have the one.

It might be something that you're able to work up to - you're still fairly newly sleeved.

I don't experience any physical withdrawal or anything when I can't drink my coffee, but mentally, I'm a grump. I'd count down the months until I can enjoy my daily cup again but I'd just get frustrated!

I'm LOVING my small skinny Cappuccino with one equal! I have never liked the taste of coffee really and always preferred to have a sweet latte or tea piling in the sugar!

Now the Capp gives me a real buzz and taste great! Plus it adds to my daily Protein count - win, win!!

Is this a Starbucks Capp.? Pre-op I loved the Skinny Vanilla Cap. I want to get one today! I love coffee-I really need to find one I like. It's truly a quality of life issue for me, more so than alcohol and possibly carbs. (Yeah, right, who am I kidding! Lol!)

I just bought a new Starbucks machine not long ago (2 weeks) called Verismo. It is only $200 and kicks some serious booty for coffee simpletons like myself. I could never figure out the more complicated, older model Starbucks latte machines ( my wife is good with it so I always begged her to make me one before). S this one is especially for me. LOL! You just pop in the little expresso capsule ( think k-cup) and the milk capsule. Press the appropriate button after each capsule is dropped in and it drips for 10-20 seconds ( milk takes 20 seconds while expresso takes 10 seconds). The milk capsules are only whole milk so I bought a frother (sp?) off Amazon for frothing with non- fat milk. It only takes me a total of 1 inure to make a Starbucks quality cap. And only 2 button presses. One more button press when you are done to do a clean cycle with the stored Water. Did I say this is awesome? :)

Now I can make myself a cap a day and feel just that much more perkier to make it through the long work day. Have fun!

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
