Eating @ 1 Month, 1 Week Post Op

Recommended Posts

Question? I am 1 month and 1 week post op and I just can't eat. I am on regular foods now and I can only eat maybe 3 -4 spoonfuls and that's it. Is the normal for the most of us and the stage after surgery.

I also just recently got out of the hospital after 4 days due to a very low potassium. The entire time I was in there I didn't eat. The only things I ate were some peaches and oatmeal and 1 cup of coffee. Please shed some light on this for me because I am lost and worried.

What exactly is 3 or 4 spoonfuls? Are you measuring your food? I eat 4-5 small meals a day. Depending on what the food is anywhere from 2-4 ounces. I am not hungry with the exception sometimes first thing in the morning but you have to eat. You should also be drinking at least 64 ounces of Water a day.

My spoonfuls are just teaspoons, and yes I measure my food out. I usually only have maybe 2 ounces at a time but I find it hard to keep down. I have been to the doctor's and we didn't find anything like a leak or obstruction. How far are you out and did you have this type of problem at 1 month?

I am at 36 days. I have not had this problem but am still on soft foods and still chew very well and eat slowly. Maybe this will help. Use a small plate and small utensils and concentrate on your chewing/eating when you do eat. I also am only having protein; no carbs or veggies(even soft ones) yet.

One other thing, you mentioned teaspoonfuls. When I put a portion in my mouth it is about a quarter of a teaspoon at a time, very little. Some sleevers use baby spoons to get the idea of eating very small portions.

I didn't eat the whole time I was in the hospital and when I came home I didn't eat much either. Probably a couple of spoonfuls also. It's very normal. It will get better when your swollen stomach starts going down and healing. Make sure you're getting your fluids in (Protein shakes).

I am almost weeks post-op and only had 3 days where I couldn't eat and that was when I had a problem with Constipation last week. I eat about 5-6 times a day and I am always starving when it is time to eat. I can only eat about 2 -3 ozs. at a time but an hour later I am starving again. I think everyone is different.

I agree that everyone's different. Try greek yogurt, thinned a little with Water. Protein drinks are also helpful. Try different foods. For me, oatmeal was a no go, as was any kind of starch other than a bite or two of a saltine, for the first coupla months.

I did well with string cheese, lunch meat, tuna, applesauce, and melon chunks.

@Amazon13, I use one of my daughter plate for kids that have the 3 sections and I use a child's spoon. I do try to chew very well until it is almost liquid. Maybe I need to take more time in between my bites. Thanks.

@lynda, oatmeal is my savior! I can eat oatmeal fine just takes a little longer, but I can't do the applesauce too much.

Thanks everyone for your comments and suggestions.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
