Donating Blood After Weight Loss Surgery

Recommended Posts

Thought I'd share this. I got an email at work about donating blood, and thought I remembered hearing that post-surgery weight loss surgery patients shouldn't donate.

So, I Googled and found this link, one of many: http://www.realself.com/question/donate-blood-after-gatric-bypass-surgery

Looks like the couple of docs who answered said they think as long as you're not anemic and your blood count is good then donating is probably not contraindicated.

I'm going to wait until after my 3-month blood tests to start donating again, assuming the tests come out normal, which I think they will.

I have donated twice since surgery. they test your blood before you donate to make sure you arent anemic. I havent had any problems with it...except for the fact that I needed to chill for a while after I donated the big one (2-pinter) once. I wont donate that much at once again, I will stick to the little one pint instead :)

I used to make specifically matched platelets donations before surgery. They called me to make a donation while I was on the preop diet and I thought I was still having the band. They told me it was a 2 month exclusion after the band and they can't wait until I'm feeling better and come back in. Not sure of the exclusion for the sleeve. I guess I'll find out when they call me next month.

Did he say or did you ask why?

I am going to attempt donating on 9-12-12. I'm a month and a half away from my one year mark.

My husband is sleeved and donates blood regularly without any issues. He is 18 months post-op though and just started donating again regularly about 5 or 6 months ago.

What part of Colorado do you live in? We are in Centennial!

I live in NW Denver. Did you both get sleeved?

Yes. I went first. I started the insurance process in April 2010 and I wanted him to do it too. He was 100% supportive of me but wasn't interested for himself. Then about 3 months into my journey he had a change of heart and decided he wanted to do this too. We both had Dr. Snyder at Rose. I was in Oct. 2010 and he was in March 2011. Unfortunately we have high-dedcutible insurance and surgery was $5K out of our pocket each time since it was in two different calendar years, but it was totally worth it!

How has your experience been so far?

My experience has been good; no complications, pretty easy recovery. Almost eight weeks out and I basically feel back to normal, except for not wanting or being able to eat as much.

I'm lucky to have great *** insurance through Kaiser, so I only paid around $500.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
