Getting Enough Liquids In ? Help!

Recommended Posts

So i have been having a very hard time getting in my fluids. I was sleeved 8/21 and here is my problem I can't stand to drink just Water . I would love to drink something with flavor my problem is I cannot drink anything with aspertime . It causes me to get a severe headache and stomach ache . So pretty much rules out the crystal light packets. And most of the other packets to add to water. I don't want to drink juice because of the sugar content in them and carbs. Anyone have any idea what I can drink I am only consuming about 32 oz of water a day and i fear im going to end up in the hospital on IV's if I dont get something figured out. I dont want to drink to much broth because of the amount of salt.

Can you add some lemon juice to your Water? Might help some. Use bottled water it's more refreshing...

Crystal light makes one called "pure" It's made with Stevia not Aspertame. I can't have that stuff either.

Those Mio drops you can add to Water have splenda in them. Can you have splenda?

There's actually quite a few things. Have you tried Fuze slenderize? It's about $1.00 a bottle though. Vitamin Water Zero and Sobe are also good choices. None of those things contain Aspertame.

Aspartame gives me wicked Migraines, too!! It truly is the chemical of the devil! LOL

So...I've had the joy of needing to find things to drink without aspartame, as well. It does require a bit of research, but there are MANY products out there! Propel Zero flavor packets, 4C flavor packets (my choice...its cheaper), Vitamin Water Zero (although I can't stand the taste of it), Isopure Protein drinks are not sweetened with aspartame (again...I can't stand the taste of them, but many like them), Muscle Milk Lite is sweetened with spelnda (I love the chocolate flavor!), the unjury and Syntrax Protein powder products are all without aspartame, and don't forget broths...they all count as "liquid", as well as Decaf tea, which you can sweeten however you like. :)

Best of luck to you!!

Laura

How about watering down unsweetened juices. I did that at first and still do because those juices seem too sweet for me.

I'm 4 day post op ;). So far so good. Is Gatorade ok to drink??? I'm drinking Water too but to change taste in switch to Gatorade. I've been home since yesterday from the hospital . Should I even think about scrambled eggs yet? Yogurt?

No eggs!!!! Others are more experienced here and will guide you, but I do know that you shouldn't eat eggs! I'm on one week Clear liquids, 2 weeks full liquids (anything pourable) and then soft foods such as eggs.

Good luck!

I was having the same problem at about 4 days out. I'm 9 days out now. Try adding 2 oz of apple juice (no sugar added) to 6 oz of Water, and put some ice in it. I received this piece of advice from an ER nurse who had gastric bypass three years ago. I can tolerate it much more easily with the juice. The Propel Zero was way too sweet, and water was too heavy. The NUTs at Johns Hopkins said to try very cold things if you can't stomach room temp fluids. That also works better for me. Each day gets a bit better.

I am drinking Isopure Grape Frost with 2 oz. grape juice mixed in. Very tolerable & I am getting both Protein & fluids in. Yes, I know grape juice is high in carbs but 2 oz to 40 oz Fluid is ok for my first week of clear.

I was on soft foods 3 days after surgery. Did best with mashed potatoes and yogurt and star free pudding. Started eggs about day 5 after surgery. Sleeved 7/20 and down 37 pounds!

yes, gatoraide is fine to drink.

did your doctor not give you a post op diet to follow? yes it's way too soon for eggs. Most doctors want their patients on a liquid diet for a period of time.

If you want to try yogurt, there are drinkable yogurts. You really need to call your doctor and ask for a specific post op diet telling you when you can advance from liquids to mushie foods.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
