Unclear Instructions About Pre Op Clear Liquid Diet (Bowel Prep)

Recommended Posts

My sleeve surgery is scheduled for 8/31 and these are my preop diet instructions. 7-14 days before surgery drink a shake for Breakfast and lunch and have a salad with lean Protein for dinner. Then three days before, take a laxative and only Clear liquids after that. Of course nothing after 10 pm the night before.

I met a sleeve buddy on here who has the same doctor but a different coordinator (we are using Dr Garcia in TJ MX). Her written instructions were the same as mine, but she was wondering exactly which day to start her Clear Liquids so she called her coordinator. Her coordinator told her, with the sleeve she didn't need to do the three day clear liquid and bowel prep part. Only to be on clear liquids on the arrival day. I then called my coordinator and she told me I DID need to follow the instructions I was given.

What were your preop diet instructions? Did you guys have a bowel prep?

I do understand the reasoning, to clear out your stomach and intestine and shrink your stomach. Also, I am down to 192 and I am hoping I can have only three incisions instead of five. Thoughts?

I was on a liquid diet for two weeks prior to surgery with a non food/drink after midnight the night before admission. I cheated and had chicken most nights for dinner but was very honest with my surgeon about that. There were no requirements of a bowel prep but I did an enema the evening before for my own personal comfort level.

A friend and I used the same doctor for our WLS procedures and we each had different instructions for our whole six month nutrition program and beyond. I understand it as we had different medical histories and general differences in body structure. Every person is an individual so comparing yourself or journey to another, even when using the same physician, is probably not wise. Follow the rules given to you and proceed from there.

I did bowel prep with magnesium citrate.....10ml bottle split in 2, the day before surgery.....5ml at 4pm, 5ml at 8pm and an enema flush before bedtime....

Good luck with surgery <3

I had no prescribed diet up until the day before surgery. The day before surgery I had take 2 dulcolax tablets at 10am or 1 suppository at 6pm and have only Clear Liquids all day, then nothing by mouth after 10pm. Preps are just different from doctor to doctor - from the time I've been on this board I have seen a ton of different instructions for pre-op and post-op. Just follow what your doctor says - you will have lost an extra couple pounds from all the liquid diet anyway, which is one less pound you need to worry about post-op.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
