Acid Reflux/heart Burn Post Op

Recommended Posts

Hi all. Fairly new here in the beginning stages of my journey! I have my apt with the surgeon August 29!

Anyways I suffir from acid reflux already (not sure if it's heartburn or acid reflux) and take lansoprazale. I heard that the sleeve can cause reflux/heartburn. Anyone out there that had either one prior to surgery and let me know if it got any worse or better after surgery? And by after I mean a few months after.

Mines not that bad but enough that it exists. I take my medicine every other day.

Thanks!

I get heartburn still. It was terrible pre surgery and a little better after but still there. I am 3 months out.

I rarely had issues with heartburn prior to surgery. Immediately following surgery (and I mean in the recovery room!), I began suffering from horrible acid reflux. They put me on meds right away, and sent me home from the hospital with a script for liquid Zantac. About 4 weeks after surgery I began experiencing bad breakthrough acid reflux...even with the Zantac. A daily dose of a Prevacid "solutab" was added to my med-list, and I've been great since then. Keep in mind, many people experience acid issues after this surgery...and many identify it incorrectly as "hunger". If you're feeling "hungry" after surgery, you might check with your surgeon to see if its really acid reflux. Best of luck!

I never had acid reflux before my surgery & I would eat all kinds of junk! I have it so bad now that I'm scheduled for GI tests in 2 weeks. I had surgery 7/9 in Mexico & was able to see a bariatric surgeon a week ago thru my insurance. She said I may need a revision to gastric bypass to help the reflux issues. I don't think I could go thru anymore surgerys right now. I just want to stop the reflux, nausea & be able to get food down.

Wow. this topic is right on time.

My gastroenterology doctor called me and told me the result of my biopsy. Look like I have acid reflux and he put me on Zantac 150 and I asked him if it would be worse or better after surgery and he told that my surgeon will tell me better but usually after by pass it is better after sleeve it is worse....

I have been on omeprazole for years but doubled my dose post surgery. Some days I take liquid gaviscon as well. I hate heartburn and reflux and suffer from both regularly.

It feels like heart burn times 100. AND, food can literally come up and sometimes out in to your mouth. Burping doesn't help. And it made me nauseous at times.

Hmm...ok thanks peeps. I of course will definitely talk to my surgeon about this topic. I'm just so set on this procedure that I don't want heartburn forcing me into bypass :(. Grrrrr

I'm in Houston too? Have you had your surgery?

acid reflux may also feel like a burning in your throat. You may cough or hack during a spell. I had acupuncture and it subsided for about 3 weeks. I now take Zantac and get a lot of relief. U have found that in the days I exercise I don't experience terrible reflux.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
