Post-Op Diet Tips

Recommended Posts

Do you have any tips on what to eat the first few weeks after surgery? I'm starting to buy stuff for my surgery (8/18/2012 with Dr. Alvarez). He has provided clear liquid diet instructions but if folks have tips on what kind of unflavored Protein Powder (what do you add it to? Water? broth? or do you buy the Protein broth?). I don't want to stock up on a bunch of stuff that I won't actually eat/drink. Any thoughts on the Isopure drink (it seems expensive...I was going to see if anybody uses unflavored protein powder with crystal lite or Vitamin water zero? Not sure how that would taste). Any tips are greatly appreciated!!

I have some videos and blog posts on my first few weeks if interested on my blog. If you read the tabs at the top around soft foods you'll see a list of what I pretty much focused on. Blog link in my signature. Good luck!

Thanks! I actually have been watching your youtube videos and went to your blog to see some recipes - I hope camping for the 4th was fun! :)

I'll look at the early blogs to see post-op stuff. Thanks for both! i have found them very helpful! I'm excited to get on the losers bench!

Even "unflavored" Protein powder has a taste - you will have to hide it in something like Soup. I don't recommend that route. I got several nectar samples before my surgery, tried them all, then bought two tubs of the kind I liked best. Personally, I thought the Isopure drinks were awful. In addition to the Nectar samples, you can go to a Vitamin Shoppe or equivalent and get as many singles as you can find/afford. Your tastebuds will be a bit wacky at first so it's good to have variety. Personally, I lived on Cherry and Oreo Nectar for the first two weeks. Then got heavy into Premier shakes from Costco/Sams. Good luck!

Right after surgery you won't be getting in 80 grams of a Protein a day. If you are going to buy Isopure, ask GNC if they have a bogo - 1/2. If they don't have a sign I ask about it and they give me 2 bottles for $8.59 I think when they are normally about $5.89 each. I am not fond of the taste of Isopure, but I found that if I used grape mio to put in the grape, orange mio to put in the orange or lemon mio to add to the Green Tea with Lemon, it was doable. I still buy a few here and there to get in 4-6 ounces once in a while to up my Protein count.

When I got to full liquids I was having a serious problem with my shakes, one day I tried Tropic 50 orange juice and added a packet of powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury unflavored and 2 teaspoons of fat free cool whip to it and it was not too bad. I since switched to Syntrax nectar "Fuzzy Navel", which is a powder you mix with Water.

Good luck to you.

you thought to purchase sugar Jello is great and don't foregt to buy sugar free popsicles and sugar free fudge bars. My bariactric coordinator suggested for the liquid stage that I use broths and moveonto soupy grits and soupy oatmeal, which was a thrill for me. Since I like to cook I used my broths and mixed in sauteed onions, which my pouch took very well intcudin sweet potatoes without the skin. Needless to say I made several trips to Wendy's to buy their baked sweet potatoe. Don't forget your shakes, which I found Atkin's advantage shake (16 grams of protein) to be the best for me and occassionally I take in Adkin's daybreak creamy strawberry banana shake ( 10g protein).

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
