Is It Ok To Drink Water Right After A Protein Shake?

Recommended Posts

Hello all. I'm 2-1/2 weeks post op and I'm real strict about not drinking any Water for 30 minutes after I eat, but should I be following that rule if my meal was just a Protein shake? I like to have my shake first thing in the morning and then work out. But I need to hydrate before and during my workout. Do I need to wait 30 minutes?

BTW...I only drink about 8 oz of shake at a time. It's about 1/3 of a full shake. About 80 calories.

I don't wait. I don't know if that's right or wrong.

I wouldn't think you would have to wait. From what I understand, the reason we don't drink right after a meal is so that it isn't "washed" right down...it's allowed to digest properly. Being that a Protein Shake is a liquid, I wouldn't think that it would need time to digest. Good question....I had never thought about that!! :-)

That's pretty much what I was thinking but I didn't want to sabotage myself by drinking too soon.

Listen to your body on this one, but I would wait a few minutes. I just feel better not combining anything too fast with my Water. Not long, even 5 minutes is better than nothing. That isn't a rule it is a preference.

if you do chase your protien shake, consider adding some bebeful Fiber to your Water, to prevent Constipation and "separate" your morning bulk from your lunch.

I would suggest that you switch and drink your Water before and while you workout, then replenish your body with the Protein Shake after workout.

I would definitely drink a Protein Shake after I lift weights. Right now I'm only 2-1/2 weeks post op and I'm just doing some light elliptical or bike riding for my work out. I do it first thing in the morning when I get up and I've never liked working out on a totally empty stomach, that's why I drink a shake first. After I work out I have a little Breakfast, usually a 1/4 cup egg beaters with a little 2% cheese. Do you think thats a bad meal plan?

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
