Wheetsin - You are absolutely right about complex vs. simple carbs and I should have noted that distinction. Even so the only comlex carbs I can have now are fruits and veggies - no Beans, nuts, etc. until 7 months out. I'm pretty surprised myself how I don't miss Pasta, potatoes or even bread at this point. I have wished I could have Wendy's chili occasionally but now I found Hormel chili with no Beans so that with some cheddar cheese on top has eliminated that craving.

Don't mean to go off topic here - just wanted to respond to you Wheetsin.

Thanks.

Did you have a leak previously and was in the hospital for a long time getting feed IV? Or am I thinking of someone else?

No worries. Your plan is fairly restrictive but it wouldn't be that way if there hadn't been any success with it. My nutritionists want me eating more calories (I'm still working hard to hit 600 - 650 and they want me closer to 850) by adding more carbs. I'd been extremely low-carbing it, probably not many more than 20 a day. I'm not supposed to aim for 60. I'm trying to get most of it through nuts & fruits, and the occasional whole grain. She told me "Strawberries & crackers..." :)

Like Wheetsin posted above, maybe make a separate area for your food. I finally had to. I would buy/get me things to eat and snack on and when I would go to the pantry mine was gone and all I could see were bags of chips and Cookies and all the stuff I'm not supposed to have anymore. I have a husband and 3 kids (ages 21, 22, & 23) in the house. When I finally got tired of "my" food being gone, I set them down and told them that these items ARE MINE. You cannot have/eat them. I can only eat a small amount and it needs to be healthy. I showed them all my plastic containers and said if they are in the ice box with food in them, LEAVE THEM ALONE. That is probably either my dinner or my lunch for tomorrow. I told them if they want to eat what I'm eating to please let me know and I will buy more of it at the grocery store. Since I had that talk with the kids, things are good. They aren't eating my meals/snacks and they have actually had me start to buy them a little bit healthier food for them to eat.

I may be totally wrong here but I often wonder when people say they are in a stall whether they are eating too many carbs. I am 11 weeks out and have never had a stall - BUT - my surgeon's diet plan does not allow me to have carbs until I am 7 months out. I can have 2 oz fruit or veg at my meals but that's it. And, to be honest, I cannot even tolerate that. I know that other surgeon's diets allow carbs right away or much sooner than 7 months out. Until I had this surgery I honestly did not realize how horrible carbs are for us - mostly because they bring on cravings for more carbs.

Like others have said you are doing great - especially considering that you had a leak early on. It's very good that you posted here for support because here is definitely where you will get it.

Hang in there and take it one day at a time. I know it's always easier to say but we are all here for you.

No carbs until 7mo out? That's extreme. I wonder why you are put on such a restrictive diet.

I think you really need to say what you are eating and how much of it? If you had a bad day why was it bad? What did you eat to make you feel like you did not eat right? At first I beat myself up over a piece of pizza, but not anymore, but that is because no matter what I ate/eat the weight comes off because I don't eat too much of anything. You say your eating is out of control so what are you eating? I lost 113 pounds without doing anything physical. Good program on HBO about metabolism...part of a series on obesity in America. Really brought into perspective our metabolisms when we are losing weight. You might really need to cut back more on what you are eating or find a better schedule for when to eat.

I'll try to answer everyone,,thanks for all the feedback, concerns and motivation. Yes, I had a leak and it held me back about a month so I guess I am more like 4 months out. As for what I eat, I eat most whatever I like but carbs do a number on me,,like bread mostly so I try to avoid it but it's hard sometimes. And I need to step back up and say something nice about my husband,,he's so wonderful and supportive in almost every other way but he thinks he is doing me a favor by stopping by the store on his way home from work and pick up a "few" things..but it is mostly unhealthy food like sweetened Cereal (which I had a LOVE for preop), crackers, chips, nuts (the salty yummy kind), sometimes he'll pick up things for me but it's like Protein Bars that he doesn't know is full of carbs and sugar..the ones he picks out anyway. Most of this stuff is not intentionally meant for me but if it's here,,I'm gonna eat it. Just cause I had surgery doesn't mean it changed my brain and the way I think about food. I'm in therapy, I am trying so hard to stick to everything but find myself with those old habits pulling me back down. I excercise almost everyday, for at least an hour. I do inclined walking, weights on the home gym and floor excercises. I have a hard time with high impact because I have osteo issues and myasthenia gravis. I have a small pool and just got it ready for the summer so I've been swimming as well. Even though I'm eating some things that aren't good for me,,I'm only eating them in small amounts so I'm not sure why I can't shed weight faster. I'm obviously doing some things wrong and will need to make a change. I really appreciate everyone's support here, it is helping me so much.

It really sounds like support issues. The seminar put on by my surgeon of choice addressed this head-on; you need the support of those around you. It might be a matter of educating your family and explaining the importance of weight loss to your health and longevity.

I had fairly good weight control from the age of 16 to the age of 32. Then I married a person 11 years my junior. She was one of these people that could eat anything and never gain an ounce. The problem was that she couldn't understand how difficult it made things for me when she kept sweets around the house. It was pretty frustrating.

If I were in your shoes I'd have a coming to the lord meeting with your family and insist upon their informed help.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
