OK. Post-ops, Do you mind if I learn from your mistakes? What mistakes did you make? I know I shouldn't eat and drink at the same time, but is there other advice?

I am about to make one and go to Disney World in a month, but I am willing to risk it.

Hi Disneyteach,

You posted in the pre-op forum, but doubtless some post-oper's read it. :)

Even though I haven't been sleeved yet, I've studied it to death. A few common, basic guidelines:

1. Don't drink anything at least 1/2 hour before eating and 45 minutes after eating

2. Chew your bites at least 25 times; it should be mushy.

3. Eat Protein first, then vegetables/fruits, and lastly, carbs.

4. Your stomach can't hold much - measure your portions carefully.

5. Eat s l o w l y. Your meal should take at least 30 minutes.

HTH!

4 year Veteran here.

I drink Water right up until I eat, and not an hour after... it is fine.

Don't count chews, it makes you crazy - just put your fork down once in a while.

I reacted HORRIBLY to two bites of smoked meat (I think if you are in the US it is known as brisket) and I think it is the preservatives

Pork that isn't tender has been an issue that caused an hour's walk right in the middle of a big family dinner - I just had to leave

Greasy food that I used to be able to eat takes three bites and I can't take another bite of anything for hours. It is so not worth it.

I used to be a big wine drinker, but now the carbs make me a prisoner to the toilet the whole next day , so now I drink vodka and Water with a crystal lite in it

See my other post on planning your food.< /p>

When I am out with others I usually count as I chew this keeps me from being so far ahead in my eating than the others I tend to eat faster if I don't pay attention and I put my fork down once in a while. Be sure to put some Protein Bars or nuts etc.snacks you can eat in your pack or other peoples pack when u go into disneyworld don't rely on being able to find Snacks u can have inside and drink, drink, drink, gets humid and sometimes hot there. Have a great time!

I'm 3 mos post op and have only vomited two times. Both times it was re-heated / microwaved meat. It was to dry. When I had the lap band, I couldn't eat heated dry meat. So far, I think it's my only true mistake. Good luck.

You guys are so awesome. This is all really helpful. I heard dry meat is a killer. I am a huge smoker of BBQ meat, so that is interesting about pork. MamaBear, awesome stuff. Thanks.

For the love of all that is holy, do NOT eat too fast! This is the main cause for why I have vomited. It's easier when I'm alone than socially eating, surprisingly enough. Some people have an easier time when eating with friends or family because they're engaged in conversation, but I find myself eating faster because I don't focus and pay attention.

I went out to a buffet for the first time last week. I fell into an old habit of always grabbing a roll with my meal. That was basically a $6 roll as I couldn't eat anything else, lol. I am definitely a carb-fiend.

Some people can drink with or right after their meal. I was told by my doctor to not drink 30 minutes before and after a meal. I pretty much drink up to the meal, but I do have to wait afterwards. It just hurts too much to drink and I can almost feel like my stomach is literally expanding after drinking too soon.

Also, I loved apples before surgery. Now they make my stomach gurgle and cause discomfort. I haven't tried eating them peeled, but having the skin on them makes my stomach fight me. :P

I agree I drink up to the meal, but not for an hour after just too uncomfortable.

First time I got sick was a reheated burger, no bun. I can't do beef. Also eating slow is a big one.

stay away from high sugar and fried food.

Good luck.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
