I am trying to figure out what I want my goal weight to be. Does anyone have a good resource to determine this? Any recommendations for how to think about this? I realize that I have to be flexible in the end however I do want something to "reach" for. My entire adult life has been either gaining or loosing so I don't really know what is comfrotable for me...

Have you seen our surgeon already? My surgeon just went by the ideal weight with the BMI chart according to my height and age. You can just type in goggle "calculate BMI" and there you will have your ideal weight which is just a guide.

I too have been toying with the question of an ideal goal weight.

What about going by your body fat percentage? I originally picked my goal weight based on the middle of my BMI range but since the chart is known for its inaccuracies, I looked into the BF%. The body fat percentage takes into consideration your lean body mass (muscle, bones, organ tissue, blood) and pounds of fat. I think it's healthier to try and decrease body fat percentage rather than just "lose weight" because that may include our muscle mass.

I am by no means an expert on the subject...I just do a lot of googling... haha.

Though the sleeve is reported to eliminate 40-60% of your "excess" weight, I consider my goal to be "healthy" range BMI, which I am now. I have a trainer 2x a week and run 4-5x a week each morning.

Personal goals are so personal, however! I believe that though a surgery may give you statistical expectations, you should make your own goals personal and about you. At the same time- be realistic. As someone who has been overweight since they were 12, I am ecstatic to be at a healthy BMI for once, and I strive for perfection, but I know in reality I do not have the genetics to look like a fitness model (plus 6 pack abs scare my husband LOL).

I'd just be realistic about it, and perhaps consult a trainer and a nutritionist about what your expectations should be. For example: people who are at a very high BMI, they tend to lose a lot of pounds compared to lower BMI patients after VSG, especially in the beginning- some times people with lower BMI get discouraged, but in reality they are likely losing at similar rates percentage wise. (This is a generalization, some high BMI patients are slow losers too).

I find a good way to figure out how much weight people lose and what some of the struggles are is to peruse this website and check out various threads on the topic.

Leah, how do you measure your body fat on a regular basis? Do you buy an Omron or something?

I used this website http://web4health.info/el/ed-dia-weight-ideal.htm and the fact that i have been 140-150 ump-teen years ago and felt healthy at that weight.. :)

      Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
      I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

      Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

      Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
