Hunger Coming Back?

Recommended Posts

OK, I'm almost 4 months out from my GS surgery. I'm doing very well. Lost about 50 pounds before surgery and 40 pounds since.

However I do notice that my hunger is back. :( Bummer. Although it is not as bad as before. And this is NOT head hunger. It's hunger....

I still do very well and keep track of my calories on MyFitnessPal and keep them under 900 calories a day.

I'm just curious if those of you as far out or further out have the same issue....

I knew it would come back. I just didn't think it would be this soon.......

Yeah, mine is pretty much back too. I'm 7 months out - it came back around 5 months out. But I feel like it's a much healthier hunger, if that makes any sense. When I'm hungry I want good food. I don't want the junk as much (except at that TOM but even then it's not totally uncontrollable.) And it only takes a fraction of what I used to eat to make me completely satisfied. I do get head hunger too. But I have to ask myself if I'm really hungry or just wanting something.

I'm not perfect all the time, but now I can make so much better choices than I ever could/did before the sleeve. I feel more like a "normal" person now as far as hunger and eating go.

I never lost my hunger. Not all of us do. It's ok though. Very little food will satisfy your hunger as long as you feed it properly. I was a volume eater and am doing great, so you will too! :-)

Is it the persistent hunger or is it controlled with slow "sleeve eating" or a protien drink?

I have had some hunger a couple of times but it was easy to manage. I never expected to not be hungry at times, just not to the point it affected so much of my day.

I hope it is manageable. Keep us informed.

I still don't have a lot of hunger I don't think. But I do have a lot more of a "taste" for food. I don't know if it's more of a variety issue than a hunger. That is why I try to constantly try to change up my meals and Snacks. I pretty well eat a lot of the same things, but I try to throw in new recipes and meals here and there. I do this by checking out the recipe thread on this forum and others, googling for low carb recipe sites, etc. There are so many low carb recipes on the internet. And even a lot of regular recipes, you can modify and make lower carb. And I am NOT a cook by any means. Most of the ones I find and use aren't complicated or have a huge ingredient list. I try to keep it easy and simple.

I know that I'm always looking at my next meal. So lately, I'm taking in alot of fluids as soon as I wake up before I have Breakfast. This helps me somewhat. I know when I haven't had a meal and I'm late and I'm feeling famished, I tend to over indulge. I get irritable and think I can eat a lot, then my restriction kicks in. I get somewhat sad and I know that my head hunger has hit home again..... Need to stop this, it's driving me crazy.

I am 7 months out and I noticed myself feeling quite hungry a lot more than normal. This really bugged me and I started researching it here on the forum. I found several threads discussing that others had this experience and it was from acid in the stomach. By taking a tums or some other similar medicine like prilosec, it went away. Apparently acid in the stomach can mimic hunger. Now I'm not sure why this would suddenly be happening. I just know that some said it does and that by taking prilosec or tums it killed it. So I tried it. And it worked! The next time I was feeling hungry when I knew I shouldn't be feeling that way I took 2 tums . It went away. I wish I had known long ago that acid in the stomach produces a similar feeling to hunger . It makes me wonder how many times in my life I've confused that with hunger . For me, this worked. I hope it helps!

I'm happy you're OK with that. I know a couple people that that happened to. One lady even had her doctors do a scope on her. She didn't quite beleive that they had done the surgery on her!!

I know for ME, I was really afraid that would happen to me.

Good luck to you...

I'm glad I'm not the only one. The docs told me it would come back. I just didn't think it would be this fast. Although it is nothing like before. Like you, I still make the right choices. And I had to attend a 12 week class that prepared me for the after effects of surgery and how to live with them. It all was very helpful.

Happy you're doing so well!

Hello!!

I get pretty hungry when it is time to eat. And it is controllable. Like I said in my OP, I'm still on track. :)

But because I have rheumatold arthritis, I went into a BIG flare for 2 months after surgery. So they had to give me a cortisone shot and daily prednisone. UGH....however I did OK and still watched what I ate. The hunger started comng back then, but I attributed that to the cortisone. Now I know it wasn't that. I've been off the cortnisone for a month now...

So for us sleevers, the hunger usually does come back. I just didn't know it would be this soon.....

Yes, I've heard that. But I do take prescription strength omeprazole every morning for my stomach. So it isn't that, I don't think. However I will e mail my surgeon and ask if maybe I need something else. I'm only 4 months out....it's kinda early for the hunger to come back I think....

I don't think I can mix tums with the omeprazole tho....

Thanks for the reminder...

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
