I am having my surgery this coming Thursday. I have been reading alot of forums and blogs, and I was curious to how many nights most people are staying in the hospital?? I was informed that as long as there are no complications, I will be leaving early the next day. It seems to me that most people are staying multiple nights?? Should I be concerned about being released to go home that early?

My surgeon does 2 nights minimum

My surgeon and I decided that I would stay 2 nights at my final consult. I had a DVT in 2009 so he took a lot of additional precautions. But the average patient with no concerns, previous issues, or serious medical conditions stays one night on the Bariatric Unit at my hospital. It just depends. I personally wasn't in a rush to go home the next day. I had no complications, but wouldn't have been comfortable going home that next morning. But everyone is different.

Mine will be 2 nights. I think its has to do with not only the Dr but hospital policy. My hospital is graded a center of excellence. They seem to have alot more rules for gastric pts then some of the other hospitals

My hospital is a Center of Excellence, too. But patients with no complications, no serious medical conditions who are walking, breathing and taking fluids in well are often released the next day. I knew I wanted to stay more than 1 night which is why I brought it up at my final consult. But there are many variances I've noticed.

I stayed 2 nights. I wouldn't have wanted to go home the next morning, heck when I got home after 2 nights,I wanted to go back and get pampered some more!! lol. Good luck to you,if you are concerned with staying only 1 day,let your surgeon know, they should accomodate you to make you feel comfortable!

I will also be staying 2 nights and getting discharged on the 3rd day. Funny, I seem to recall quite a few people saying they were only staying 1 night on a previous thread. I thought it was strange that my Dr. was doing 2 nights.

I am also having my surgery done at a center of excellence. As long as everything goes well, I will only be in for one night also. Good luck to you!

I was in for 2 nights, and that seemed to be the standard.

I was wondering the same thing. I heard this could be done outpatient, and sent home the same day. I knew a overnight stay should be required. Maybe it depends on the doctors. Thanks for the info everyone!

Thank You everyone for your input. My provider/hospital is a Center of Excellence as well. I have a fairly high tollerance for pain, and no "underlying medical issues", so I am sure this is why they say just a 1 night stay.... Dont get me wrong.... I would love to stay 2 - 3 nights.. just for the extra pampering... I remember when I had my children.. I would have been happy staying in the hosital for a week!!! I am less then 24 hours away from being sleeved!! And so stinking excited!! I'm not a nervous person..and I dont feel nervous... but I have notice that I have not been able to sleep well for the last 3 night... so I'm not sure if its some deep down nerves going on that I just am not feeling or if its just extreme excitement... probably a little of both!! I feel like a kid -- waiing to walk thru the gates of Disney World!!!

CONGRATULATIONS! I know you are excited. I am still in the paperwork stage, but I am hoping to be sleeved by early May!! I pray for a successful surgery and after having the best life EVER!

I'm having my surgery on 3/20 and will stay only one night, as long as everything is fine. I have no comorbidities or health issues and am 33. Like the pp, I would be happy to stay a few nights :) but I am self pay and if I stay an extra night, it will be an extra $1000 plus any additional tests or procedures I would need......so I'm hoping it will just be the one night.

I went home the day after my surgery, but it wasnt until after my leak test so it was early afternoon before I was discharged. I was feeling good and was happy to leave. I am just more comfortable recovering at home as opposed to sleeping in a hospital bed. My surgeon basically gave me the option of staying another night and would I am sure have insisted if I had any trouble like no getting in enough liquids.< /p>

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...
