I Need An Iron Supplement That Won't Make Me Sick.

Recommended Posts

So the numbers are in and I'm anemic. I have fibroids anyway so it might not be from the surgery -- in fact I think I went in to my surgery slightly anemic -- but I feel tired and I'm thinking that's probably the reason.

Problem is, I can't take Iron pills. Every time I try I get so nauseated I quit within days. It's not that I'm trying to be noncompliant but feeling like you're going to hurl all the time does somewhat mess with your quality of life.

Anybody found a good solution to this?

I've always been sick if I take my Iron pill on an empty stomach. Multi Vitamins do that for me as well, so I always eat a mini babybel cheese just before I take them in the morning. Perhaps putting something in your tummy before the iron pill will help you as well?

I take carbonyl Iron and it doesn't upset my stomach, although if you burp after taking the pills the taste is quite disgusting. I also take them with a little food, like a Triscuit with Peanut Butter. The brand I take is Sundown Naturals "Perfect Iron." I think I got them on Amazon.< /p>

I take a flintstones chewable with Iron now. I was taking a chewable iron tablet that I got from my surgeons office. I think its Bariatric Advantage but its 27 mg of iron. It tastes like a sweet tart. I would chew it up at night before bed. Never made me sick. Vitamins on an empty stomach always make me deathly ill and I cant take but a few antibiotics because I get so sick sooo take it from me... they wont make you sick. Maybe you should try chewing two flintstones with iron and see if you can do that. They are much milder than the grownup versions and my labs have been fine so far. hth

Always so happy to see you here! Of course I am not often here and may be you are ;-P...

Anyway I take the Bariatric Advantage Iron...it is a better form that is much easier to digest. It is chewable and as mentioned, the aftertaste is a bit gnarly! However, I find it not only easier on my stomach but it also does not cause Constipation as far as I can tell!

p.s. No wonder you have been tired! I was reading back in your posts since I was last here and noticed you mentioned when you lowered your calories you would be unable to move- low Iron will do that! I am about to have all that stuff tested...

:). Thanks you guys. I guess I'll start with chewables. I was reading that liquid Iron supplements worked pretty well too.Guess I'll just start experimenting...good times.

Hi Miss Skinny Meggie:)

Yeah, but you know I went into the surgery with slight anemia. I kind of don't remember life *without* being slightly anemic. But I should probably make an effort at this point because with the surgery it's bound to get worse.

:). Lookin awesome, kid.

I have trouble with pills. Here's my Iron tips... 1. Try "Natrol" liquid iron. I got it at The Vitamin Shoope. It tastes bad but thats better than feeling sick. 2. Try "Hema-Plex". I got it at Whole Foods. It has 85 mg of iron so I chop it in half, grind it up with a pestle and mortar and mix it in applesauce. 3. Try Gummy multis with iron. 4. Take pills WITH food and take them in the evening vice earlier in the day. Good luck. Leah

Aw thanks! I am very happy with how it has gone though it has slowed way down now. I work out a LOT- and that keeps me in a good place even when I carb it up. I can't even believe how active I have become!

I have had to fight anemia since being sleeved. I have always been borderline anemic, but pre-sleeve, could easily correct it. With the reduced calorie intake after being sleeved, it is harder to correct with food alone. Multi Vitamins with Iron weren't enough for me - I was still anemic. I take two of the Bariatric Advantage chewable iron tablets before I go to bed, along with two chewable Vitamin C tablets. The iron is absorbed better along with Vitamin C. It doesn't upset my stomach at all.

Iron locks me up pretty bad. My bariatric nurse recommended FerroSequels and I've had good luck with them thus far. They are a pill, however, so it won't be ideal if you can't swallow them. You can find them at any drug store - green box. I find that I only need them during "that time of the month," and I just do Flinstones chewables with Iron for the rest of the month. Hope that helps!

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
