Need Some Advice. When Were You Allowed To Eat Bread?

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I am 3 post op and was able to have a piece of toast based on the NUT menu I am following. I have had some concerning feedback about this. I reviewed my info again and at 4 weeks post op I am allowed bread as well. It just says to limit the amount. To be clear I have had half a piece of bread not a whole bread basket 3x's a day. It also takes me forever to eat and I have not had any bad reaction to it.

Now I am confused! When were you allowed to eat bread? Should I just wait until much later? I am really concerned about this now. I do not want to do anything to ruin my sleeve. Help! :confused5:

My NUT told me to avoid bread, rice and pastas for at least 3 months as those items, once in the stomach, actually expand. This limits the amount of space in your stomach, which should be utilized by Protein and good carbs.

For me, even at 3 months bread was very uncomfortable. I have just recently, at 6 months out, been OK having a couple bites, but my tastes have changed and I really no longer crave bread like I used to.

But at 3 weeks out ... wow. And that is on the NUT's diet plan ...? My NUT's plan was pureed Soups and cottage cheese. Breads and alike were 3 months out. You might want to give them a buzz and clarify.

I am mostly avoiding bread, potatos, Pasta and rice, although I'm not fanatical about it. My doc's diet plan says that toasted bread is allowed in the mushy stage. They don't recommend regular bread at all. I have had some bread, maybe 4 pieces since being sleeved 4 months ago. I did Atkins in 2010 (and before that) and lost 50 pounds. Because of the time spent on Atkins, I don't really crave carby foods. My experience with Atkins also convinced me that I stay full longer on Proteins rather than a combo of Protein and carbs. Bread, rice and Pasta also fill up my sleeve too quickly, IMO, so I prefer to eat protein-rich foods and veggies instead. YMMV.

Good luck!! :)

Its amazing at how different NUT's plans are. I actually went to one that suggested eating more whole grains and then vegetables and Proteins - because of the old food pyramid. I got up and walked out.

I don't think eating a half a piece of toast if it sits well with you after a few weeks will ruin your sleeve, its just amazing that it IS sitting well :) I would try to avoid, as that bread is taking up valuable Protein real-estate in your sleeve ;)

Im with PDX on this also, my NUT told me no rice, Pasta, bread, potato, corn etc for first 3 months, I complied and about the 4th month I took a bite out of bread and the mayo/bread/turkey/cheese tasted nasty to me so I let it go. up until last month (6th month) I got permission to eat whole wheat crackers or Fiber one low fat bread (50 calories a slice) once a week and still bread made me feel uncomfortable, I eat it very very slow and avoid drinking any fluids maybe till 1 hour later..

As for rice, rice makes me puke and I feel sick to my stomach when attempting to eat even if its a few grains. Potato I avoid 100%.

Thank you all for the advice. I think I am going to avoid the bread and starches until after 3 months too. Just makes the most sense! I wish the NUTS would all follow the same plan to avoid the confusion!

Again thank you everybody! I do not know what I would do without all of you! :)

I eat bread and Cereal now and I've eaten them since about 2.5 months out. I make sure both things are high Fiber whole grain instead of white flour and sugary. I have Fiber One cereal whenever I need to move my Protein on through too (avoid constipation). I think you'll be ok, just don't eat it very often until your further out :)

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
