One bite too much=nausea?

Recommended Posts

I am 7 weeks post op and still getting used to my sleeve. I take my time eating but sometimes it seems like I listen to my cues and take another bite them wait to see what it feels like. Then I feel nauseous. Is that what 1 bite too many feels like for anyone else? Any suggestions on how to really know what I need?

Yep! One bite over does it for me every time, especially if it's meat. Done. Totally not worth it. Hopefully time will allow us to really know when enough is enough.

You have to learn to stop before you're full.

It really is true that it takes our brains 20 min to tell our stomachs we are full. I had to learn to eye ball how much I could eat and not eat one bite more or I would be sorry.

At that time I could eat one of those tiny little cans of chicken salad. I had to picture the food fitting in that can. That's what worked for me!

I will have to listen closer I guess! Im especially nervous about going back to work tomorrow. I am a nurse on a busy floor and sometimes have limited time for lunch. I will do my best!

Yes, ONE bite is nausea, TWO bites is MISERY.

It DOES get better as the stomach heals although you can still get "dumping" when you over eat - the heart races, you sweat profusely and get nauseas, sometimes barf - been there twice in the last 2 months - not fun. It sure beats the way it used to be though scarfing down everything in site, burping and then packing in more and just adding the pounds on and on. We need to pay very close attention to the FULL signal we are so used to ignoring.

When I eat a little fast, I tend to start burping even after two or three bites... thats my que to slow down. I will wait a few minutes, try a few more bites with time in between. I start burping again and i know I am done. I am not done on the first burping, just eating too fast. I can tell I have only eaten a couple of bites and I know I need a little more than that so I wait and then eat one slow bite at a time until I start that burping again.. Then I stop. I dont have the nausea if I do this. It seems to be my ques that I have learned to read. Good luck with yours. It takes time to figure out what your body is telling you but once you get it down pat, you will be ok.

I think this is different for everyone. I have to look at the quantity on the plate to judge because regardless of how slowly I eat I do not get a full signal and can go from OK to the next fork/spoonful being too much. I am 9 weeks out and am only just realising that my full signal is missing!

I am also kind of like you, but ugh today I felt "dumping" at it's worst. Sweating, naseaus, and I realized JUST TODAY that just because I can take big bites and swallow no problem, that I still need to eat slow and chew.

I for some reason didn't clue into this earlier.

what a mess!

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
