Preop Diet frustration, Need help!!

Recommended Posts

I went for my preop appointment with my Dr. today. My surgery was scheduled for the 19th and according to my scale I had lost 8 lbs. According to their scale I had lost 1 lb.... REALLY!!! Now my surgery is pushed back a week in hopes that I can loose the weight. I fully understand the reasoning behind the weight loss and the need to reschedule. My frustration comes in that I have been following what I thought was an appropriate preop diet. The nuturitionist at the Dr's office moved out of state and they haven't replaced her yet. (it's been a month) I went through all my information I had received before she left and found nothing on what to do for a preop diet. My Dr. requires a liquid diet for 2 weeks prior. I've been looking at the information for right after surgery and following that. Protein Shakes, low calorie Soups without anything in them, and no calorie drinks. I'v been keeping my calories at 800-1000 per day. :(

Any suggestions would be helpful,

Thank you,

My pre-op diet is 650 to 800 calories with like 10 carbs. the goal of the pre-op is to shrink your liver to get it out of the way. the only way to do that is eliminate the carbs and throw your body in to ketosis. Kinda like the Atkins diet with without all the fat.

Drink tons of Water

At my pre-op,.my doc sent me home with all the food I was allowed to eat/drink. It was not much and the second day of the diet was a killer.

By the way, I'm on the sixth day and my surgery is in the morning... I have lost somewhere around 5 to 7 lbs on pre-op. Will know exactly in the morning.

Sorry to hear about your troubles, hang in there.

Thanks Mr. Smith. I started to do a little more research on line and saw the info about the 10g of carbs. I started looking at what I was "eating" actually drinking and there were LOTS of carbs. Starting a whole new approch and hopefully it will help. I believe everything happens for a reason.

Good luck on your surgery tomorrow!!

Thank again for your reply!

When did your doctor go over your pre-op diet? I've had my consultation and schedule my first nutritionist appointment for the end of the month. A two week liquid diet seems very daunting!!

That's the problem Illgeturhairdid, no one ever did. I had a nutritionist consult as a pre qualifacation and received all the post op info but nothing for preop. They don't have a nutritionist on staff right now so there is no one I can even ask for help. Even when I went to the Dr. yesterday he asked what I was eating but never gave me a list or any real idea of what I should be eating. (calories, carbs. fat, etc) I was hoping someone here could help me out. Apparently what I was eating wasn't working so I guess I know what not to eat. LOL I only have a week now to try to lose 10 lbs at least. :myscared:

I am on day 10 of my preop diet. I am only allowed the Bariatric Advantage shakes and Clear liquids. According to my documentation, I am allowed to use milk in my shakes. I have been consuming mass amounts of Crystal Light. Mr. Smith is right ... you have to get that ketosis to kick in and carbs prevent that.

I am surprised that your surgeon didn't define exactly what you can and can't have.

I have lost 18 lbs. in the last 10 days.

Thanks PeteO, I agree about the surprised part. Starting to wonder if I'm at the right place. This isn't the first thing that I've questioned. Atleast I know I'm on the right track now! Thank you so much!

You know what? You are right! I had to cancel my surgery on the 26th so that you could have my slot! That makes me feel so much better about having to cancel last minute. :-)

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
