Too cold - post op

Recommended Posts

I've notice I get very cold post op. Is it because I don't have the extra tissue as insulation keeping me warm. A few examples are in the super market and movie theaters I have to bring a light jacket.

At night I must move the thermostat up a few degrees and/or use a blanket. Never had this happened before WLS.

Any one else share this situation.

I do. Our gas bill was sky high the month after surgery. Since then, I just dress warm. I also resort to drinking hot Water, warming my blanket in the dryer for a few minutes (feels great!!) and lingering in a really hot shower.

If I get up and move around enough, I warm up, but if I am just sitting still reading or on the computer, I am cold.

I know I will need extra clothes this winter, but I am waiting to buy warm stuff because I don't know what size I will be. I plan to wear scarves, undershirts, and boots this winter to help stay warm.

I'm hoping the chill goes away as weight loss slows. I will put up with a lot in return for averaging more than 2 lbs. per week in weight loss!

I was just in the hospital 9 months post op and they had to keep bringing me warm blankets, they one heavy tech said thank goodness she is not shivering any more! She then went on to ask me 101 questions about getting the sleeve.

If it's cold I am freezing, if it's hot I am just fine ;) My husband was thrilled after I got sleeved because I kept turning up the heater and normally I keep it low to keep the bill down. Then just yesterday I was baking in the kitchen and one of the kids asked if she could turn on the fans because it was really hot in the house, I felt just fine and didn't realize it had gotten so warm lol

I read somewhere that for every 15 lbs you lose that is like taking off a winter coat. I run hot, very hot but I have been a lot cooler too. Usually at night I would sleep uncovered and my husband would be under the sheet and a blanket. Now I am under the sheet and blanket. I love that side effect!

It was 80 degrees & I wore a winter sweater to work. LOL. I've found that any place with air conditioning is way too cold for me. I keep a sweater at work & one in my car just in case I suddenly get chilled. People probably think I'm crazy. Good to know others are going through the same thing.

I too have been cold since surgery. I am so cold in my office, I keep a fleece there and have a heater. Since my part of the country has been 100+ degrees for two months, I go outside to warm up and enjoy the heat!

Yep....I had surgery Dec 1st....I use to be in flannel pajamas, socks and slippers wrapped in a blanket after surgery. My husband use to laugh at me. Since his surgery he now understands and he keeps a sweatshirt in the car. For the summer we usually have the air set on anywhere between 80-82 during the day and fine with just a ceiling fan and sometimes I have to turn off the fan because we get cold. I have been starting to buy sweators and such at the thrift store to stock up for the winter. I am seriously considering buying an electric blanket for the winter. And I live in Alabama. But I rather be cold and wear layers and still look thin then be hot and fat. LOL

Ditto for me lol. I hope it lasts for a little while though, I live in the south and 90+ temps don't bother me at all. Internal air conditioning is great, however am not looking forward to the winter months, I can't even imagine how cold I'm going to be then!

Yep, I can relate. Before surgery I felt like I was hot most of the time even hot flashing at 41 with the exception of my office, which is freezing year round. I now travel with a light jacket or sweater. I keep a wrap at work as well as my heater close at hand. I didn't think it would happen to me, but boy was I wrong.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
