Pre-op liquid diet worries

Recommended Posts

Hi all! I'm new to this forum. I have some concerns about the pre-op diet. I have to be on a strict liquid diet of Protein Shakes for two weeks, and it's limited to 800 calories. I tend to get symptoms of what may be hypoglycemia when I get hungry, so I worry about this. The symptom I worry about most is the really irritable mood and fogginess. I work in the mental health field, which means a very high stress job. I don't want to snap at people! Will the doctor know I've cheated if I drink a little juice or have a hard candy or something to bring my blood sugar back up??

Hello and welcome. I am currently on my 2 week pre-op diet. my surgery is on week from today...aug 16th. I work in the same field as you (i'm a psych tech) and i have suffered with hypoglycemia as well. i havent had any problems so far with this on the diet. I did get some sugar free popsicles and fudge pops as well as sugar free Jello to help me through the cravings. I'm sure the hard candy..as long as its sugar free wont be bad, but i would ask your surgeon about the juice. it might spike that blood sugar a little to much, as well as take you out of ketosis. i have been cranky on this diet, but it usually is around the times that i have to prepair food for my family to eat, and relize that i wont be able to eat anything for weeks. lol ....good luck to you, welcome again, and im sure you will do great!

Dude, I didn't adhere to the sugar free stuff at all. I don't like chemicals so i used the 1/2 stevia 1/2 sugar stuff. juice was a saving point for me when I felt faint.

Thanks for the feedback! I'm the same way with sugar free stuff. I don't like to eat anything artificial. The sweeteners actually give me a stomach ache, so that's another worry. I know the liquid shakes my surgeon makes us drink pre-op all have sucralose in them! I'm thinking I'm going to have to have a little juice with stevia at least or something when I get super cranky. I just hope the doc can't tell when he does the surgery and get mad at me!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
