I am having my surgery in the US and I am scheduled as the first procedure of the day (8:30 a.m. surgery start time). I met with a pre-op nurse the other day and she indicated that I would likely be able to go home the following afternoon if all went well. Is a one-night stay normal? For other US patients, how long did your surgeon advise your stay would be and did most of you only stay one night? I know that all could change if there are any complications but just want to get an idea of what is "normal."

I know every doctor handles things differently, but when I had the vertical sleeve I stayed for 3 days on doctors orders. He kept me and I walked the ward for three days...he made sure I had no swallowing problems and that there were no leaks with a swallow test before I was able to leave the hospital and instead of having pain meds in the hospital I had the qball which was a ball filled with lidocaine that dripped on the incision on my stomach that went home with me and once it was deflated I just pulled it out.....didn't hurt at all. I had the best doctor ever!!!!

it all depends on how your body deals with the drugs, and accepting food.

My surgery was the last surgery of the day (3:30 p.m.) this past Monday. I came out of recovery around 8:30 p.m. and I was released from the hospital Tuesday morning around 11:00 a.m. I was in the hospital less than 24 hours. I also did everything they told me to and I drank Water when they brought it to me. I didn't have any complications and have been getting in all my fluids. I am Day 5 right now and feel fantastic. I still have a little pain around my incisions when I get up and when I'm walking but that is it.

I was sleeved at Kaiser in Richmond, CA. They told me that a normal hospital stay is 24 hours or less. I guess it just depends on the hospital and the surgeon? Best of luck to you!!

I had my surgery on July 18th at 9:30 (second patient of the day). I was released the same day at 3:30. My doctor had told me all along that it would be out patient and I have to admit it freaked me out a bit, even the day of the surgery I was wondering how it was possible to be going home. In hind sight, everything was fine and I am happy that I came home. The only thing that was a little difficult was that I was soooo tired but once I got home, I was really glad to be there and I don't think staying in the hospital would have made any difference. You will be fine and the doctors and staff will take good care of you. Good luck

I was the 18th, 2nd patient but a black out ensured I didn't get in until after 1 and surgery started around 2. I got out Wednesday evening after my surgeon finished his procedures for the day. I was released around 5. The first night, though tired, I still felt energized. They said the hoped I could make it to the nurse's station on my first walk and I circled the floor at a quick pace. The newness wore off though and I rather enjoyed my few "extra" days but I could easily have gone home the next evening. You'll be fine. Your doctor may have a plan but so does your body and the two will determine what is best together.

I was sleeved on Thursday at 7:30 am and then released from the hospital Friday afternoon (around 2pm)...so only one day because the swallow test did not indicate leaks, my vitals were good, and i was able to keep liquids down. I also had the q-drip ball slow release pain meds that we removed from home on day two. I think what really helped was getting out of bed and walking. For me it was more comforatable to be standing and out of bed walking to help release the gases from surgery. So I walked as much as I could. In fact when it was time to release me, they couldn't find me because I was walking on another floor of the hospital.

I was really ready to come home as I couldn't get comfortable in the hospital bed and !get much sleep with the nurses constantly coming in to check vitals, change IV bag, give blood thinners, ect... Once I got home, I finally slept four hours straight in a recliner....I'm still not ready to sleep straight in my bed yet.

Like other postings have mentioned...I think it really depends on how your body reacts...after all if your doctor wants to keep you longer than it's better to be in the hospital where you can get the care you need. Good luck!

I only stayed one night and that is what my surgeon told me I would stay unless I had problems.

Just one night for me. That's what my surgeon told me.

I went in on Monday and was the second surgery. Was released first thing on Wednesday morning.

2 nights.

I was sleeved at 730am on Tuesday and went home at 11am on Wednesday. My surgeon usually keeps his VSG patients one night. I think I recovered better at home anyways!

I was sleeved 1:30pm on a Tuesday afternoon and was released from the hospital exactly 48 hours later. Two nights in hospital which I expected. I know of some who stay three nights.
