Acid after surgery?

Recommended Posts

Im still in the approval phase, but wondering about the acid after surgery issue. Seems like most, if not all, sleeved people are taking antacids like Prilosec or something 2 times a day. I take it now (once a day) and have for years but I never have any heartburn issues, i guess due to that. I was hoping weight loss would make it so i could stop taking it, but sounds like the surgery causes more acid than normal? Does it ever stop? Does anyone know why the acid occurs?

Thanks,

Sockmonkee

I have never had acid issues prior to surgery but day one home from the hospital I had BAD acid issues. I had to take prevacid. Now, I am almost one month post surgery and the Prevacid is no longer needed. Haven't taken it in 2 weeks!

Hope that helps. GOOD LUCK!

All the best,

Dawn :)

Yes, it IS common but not universal. The operation cuts out most of the tissue that has the proton pumps that produce acid, this means your stomach produces LESS acid but the resulting sleeve space may be too small to hold it, so it may come up as acid stomach. It seems to lessen with time. I am on Omeprozol, which is a prescription generic equivalent for prescription Prilosec, it's cheaper with my RX insurance and twice the dosage of the OTC version - hence the reason a lot of sleevers take the OTC version twice a day.

I also munch on a few saltine crackers once or twice a day to lessen the acid. Provides quick cheap relief without medication and will not cause anyone to ruin their diet unless you gobble down a whole lot every day.

I have had GERD for about 7-8 years. Have taken Nexium for it and still do. I never had issues with my acid unless I would forget to take my medication pre-sleeve. Now that I am sleeved, I still take my meds and do not notice any difference. I was really concerned about this. I too, was scared that I would have terrible acid issues, but have not.

I hope that it stays this way!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
