Calculating Goal Weight?

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

Please help me to calculate my goal weight.

I am 5'5" tall, female

I am currently at 163 lbs with a BMI of just over 27.

150 lbs would be approx 25 BMI

I think my ideal weight would be approx 133 lbs, but don't think I will ever reach that.

My waist is still huge at 37" as I carry all my fat in the middle.

Any ideas as to what I should aim for.

All comments, ideas and suggestions welcome!

Bookleen

We have roughly the same statistics. At first I was aiming for a normal BMI, which means losing about 15 more lbs. Now I don't know.I've changed goal so many times. Maybe aim for a BMI of 24-25? I too carry most of my excess weight round my middle. How old are you if you don't mind me asking?

I'm struggling with the same issues, trying to figure out if a goal weight of around 210 is reasonable (I'm bouncing around 230 and have been since February). The BMI charts say that I "should" weigh 190, but THAT will never happen!

BTW: chilo, from the other thread, you're looking marvelous; I know we tend to be our own worst critics, but this man's outside opinion is that you don't need to change a thing. I can only hope to get to where I'm looking so lean and trim and happy!

It's hard to find a good metric to decide what you "should" weigh. I'm at the point where I feel like I'm living/eating healthfully and I'm just going to see where I level out at.

Hi Chilo,

I'm 56 years old, perhaps that makes things more difficult.

Anyway, I have not been keeping to the sleeve rules.

Are you still losing?

Yeah pretty slowly now, but still losing some. I originally wanted to get to 170, but I just got under 190 and am feeling pretty good where I'm at. We'll see what happens...

I'm female, 5'10, with a fairly large bone structure.

My surgeon (AGB) was aiming at about 210 for me. I think that's what he considered "realistic."

About 180 was the last time I was happy/comfortable with my body. Damn, that was a long time ago.

BMI is a subjective guideline. I can be UNDER ideal body fat, but still be "obese" according to BMI if I'm muscular.

Per BMI, your goal would be in the 111 - 149 range.

Per BMI, my goal would be in the 129 - 173 range. I'm honestly not sure I'd like the way I looked at 129... :/

My goal is going to be size based, I think. :) To hell with what I weigh...

Being only 5-6 weeks postop, I'm still working on my initial goal weight which is based on attaining a body composition of around 15% fat mass, which is on the lean side of normal for men. Assuming that the weight loss is primarily fat (ideal and not necessarily entirely accurate, but a decent starting point), that would put me at a BMI of about 28 and 200#. I figure that I would re-adjust as I get closer to goal and see how things progress and feel. I suspect that 200-210 is where I will end up as that was a long term stability point way back when, and my 3 week stall happened in the 260-265 range which is another stability point in my past (both on the up side and the down.)

Rick and Wheetsin make a good point I think My surgeon says that people who have been overweight for a while develop larger bones to support that weight. Therefore one's ideal weight might be 150 but for that person 180 for example will be the better weight.

I am just in my second week and have a long way to go but I am figuring around 220 when it's all said and done. When I first thought about the surgery and then got into all the details they wanted a goal weight and I thought back to when I was in my best shape and that is when I played ball in college at around 220. Now the best weight in my real adult life was at at 233, I felt very good and that was about 25 years ago.

I am 60 years old and 6ft. tall. I doubt I will ever look at the bmi or anything else for me its going to be how I feel and somewhere under 190 pounds is not going to get it and I already know it lol.

Good luck to everyone,

evilstepdad

Well I think that's sort of the point we're all trying to make; the BMI and height/weight charts are approximations -- we all know that -- but how do we come up with a realistic number? I know that at 230 I'm not "done" yet; I still have what I call the "jelly roll" around the middle. I've also come to terms with the fact that it's not going to be effortless anymore like it was in the beginning; just as I'm getting to a more "normal" weight, I'm also going to have to do what "normal" people have to do if they want to lose that last 20-30 pounds -- work my butt off for it! And that means watching what I eat (carefully!) -- no more snacking and junk food and STILL losing weight -- and hitting the gym several times a week (as well as lots of cardio).

But still, I have no idea what's a reasonable "target" weight. I guess, like the definition of pornography, I'll know it when I see it!

I'm a female, 5'6 and have been over 200 lbs since i was at least 13 years old. in my 20's i dropped down to 170 but my goal was 160 but my body wouldn't allow that. i'm a pear shape and people were telling me i was looking to skinny, lol eventhough my bottom size was a 14. i'm 5 days post op and weigh 228 before surgery, 248 before preop diet. i asked the surgeon what my goal weight should be(i was curious about what he would say) and he said 130's, i think i basically laugh in his face but i meant no disrespect. i'm in the health profession i don't think bmi is a very accurate tool or take into consideration race (ie black women vs white women). according to bmi at 160 i would be overweight, but i think my bottom size would be 10 or 12, which is okay by me. so i'll see how i look as a whole once i'm in those weight range.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
