Actually my thyroid was removed two years before my sleeve. My pcp has been monitoring my thyroid levels since surgery and managing my syntroid dosage every month. My advice to you is to go to your doctor and discuss ways to trick your thyroid into doing what you need it to do regarding your weight loss. My weight loss has been slow but study only problem is seeing my doctor every month the co pays are killing me. I hope this helps, take care

I have had hypothyroidism for about fifteen years now, plus I am post-menopausal. I have the basal metabolism of a lizard in winter and I can still lose weight with the sleeve. I am on relatively high doses of levothyroxine because I feel best if my TSH levels are around 1.0 but people are different and you might not like it that low. If I am above 4, I am cold, my skin is dry, and I feel lethargic. Work with your doctor on finding what makes you feel best and be reassured that you can lose weight with hypothyroidism. Exercise also helps to burn calories and rev up your metabolism once you feel up to it.

I am taking 125 mcg of Synthroid and can't lose weight and keep it off on my own. My Dr thinks the Sleeve will allow me to lose and maintain some sense of weight loss - how much? He has not said yet.

To be honest, I would be happy with a 50 lbs loss at this point in life. I am 30 and tired of having the energy of a slug. The weight makes everything that much worse. I look to these boards for motivation and inspiration in hopes that other Hypothyroid patients are able to lose and maintain with the Sleeve - ohhh please dont let this be in vain.

It is so important to pre-Sleevers and newly sleeved patients to hear the updates from Hypothyroid patients. Thanks for posting!!

I, too, am really hypothyroid and take 125 mcg of Synthroid daily. It took around 2 years to get my thyroid levels into the "normal" range, but that didn't really make any difference to my weight loss efforts or my energy level. I'm perimenopausal, and my body has such a slow metabolism it isn't funny--my body holds onto every single calorie with an Iron grip!!

Surgery really was the only option for me. It has resulted in a pretty good weight loss--I'm at the 28-day mark and am down 27 pounds. I know the loss will slow up as I go, but as I get more energy and add in more exercise, I'm hoping to rev that metabolism UP and get this weight off gradually. I had a huge stall in the middle of these 28 days and still managed to lose, so it can be done. I do take my Synthroid religiously first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. I'm hoping as I lose weight that dose will kind of be more effective--less body weight, same dose of Synthroid, maybe better metabolism boost? That's what I'm hoping for anyway.

Best wishes! Hypothyroid or no, weight loss is happening for me with the sleeve.

Meg

I experience both. Thyroid meds can help, and there are cortisol meds for the adrenal fatigue. Recovery is slow, i started feeling better on meds after about two months. You must be extreamly tired. Sorry, but just keep getting treated and you WILL feel better. Treat that and the weight will come off. I chose WLS and I don't have results yet.Good Luck!

I have been hypo since i was 13, that is 26 years! Since my sleeve, my level of synthroid has been adjusted 1 time, in 6 months! Prior to the sleeve, it was being adjusted every 3 months. We could just not get it right. I have to say, that losing the initial weight was really easy, a lot easier than with the band, but I am stuck at the last 15 to go for about 2 1/2 months now. But that has NOTHING to do with my thyroid, it has to do with my carb monster and my inability to follow the rules. I have so much energy, it is sick sometimes, my husband doesn't know what to do with me anymore, i am always on the go instead of always on the couch! Life is so much better, and I am now down from 150mcg to 118mcg. It is amazing!!! And my PCP is very happy with my numbers now.

I'm hypothyroid, it runs in my family as well (most of them who have the problem were never obese). I have been taking synthroid for many years (can't even remember the dosage right now lol), and it lands me well within the normal TSH zone. However, being hypothyroid didn't really seem to affect my metabolism at all, as I have a pretty good one. Being hypothyroid didn't make me gain any weight that I can tell (other reasons for that, nothing to do with thyroid); being treated for it (while helping other symptoms) did not help me lose any weight either. It's quite possible that the synthroid helped me to stay the same weight for the past >10-years prior to VSG, though. No real way to tell.

I'm still on the same synthroid dose post-op as I was pre-op, when I get my next labs I'll be interested to see where the TSH is now, though I don't expect anything to change on that front, frankly. I have heard of many other hypothyroid people who've had loads of success with WLS, so I definitely think it's do-able.

I have hypothyroidism andhave been on meds for ~18 years. I didn't notice any issues with post-sleeve weightloss due to my condition. My meds have been slightly adjusted 3 times since surgery.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
