Question for post sleevers!!

My drugs were good. i woke up thinking I was still waiting for the doc! So I didn't have any type of tube memory!

I've had several surgeries and it was only on my very first one did I wake up with the tube still in my throat. I wasn't even warned about it. I didn't freak out either, I figured it were normal since I'd never had any other surgeries at that time. I was too drugged up to really care anyway.

Don't worry, its really not as scary as it sounds.

Everybody is woken up with the tube down their throat. The good thing is, you won't remember it! I was told before surgery they would wake me up to take the tube out. After surgery, I asked why they didn't wake me up and the tube was out. I was then informed that they DID wake me up and the surgeon spoke to me for a few minutes after the tube was taken out. I remember NONE of it. I even said to the surgeon at my follow-up visit, "I heard you spoke to me after surgery, sorry, I hope you didn't say anything important bc I remember none of it". You are so fresh out of anesthesia that you won't even know you are awake. You will most likely fall back asleep and the next thing you'll hear is the recovery room nurse telling you to take some deep breaths.

This is what I remember for surgery. Rolling down the hallway to the OR, moving to the table, then I was in my room and they were putting the compression stockings on me. I don't even remember recovery at all. As for the blood clots, my doctor prescribed Lovenax. This was a self injectible blood thinner I had to take for 14 days after surgery. They also required us to to walk within 4 hours after surgery and to walk every 2-4 hours while in the hospital. I started walking after I got to my room and by late afternoon I was actually walking every hour. I did not have a pain pump but they did give me a great pain killer every 4 hours and I hardly had any pain. Good Luc.

Thank you to everyone!! I have loved reading about how everyone woke up!! I am feeling much calmer about the whole tube thing now. I just keep telling myself....whatever happens through this entire process...."just go with it and get through it!!!"

I have no recollection of a tube down my throat, only the scratchy feeling afterward. I wouldn't sweat it if I were you.

Walk, walk, walk! I hear that is the key!!

I was the only person on my floor (of sleevers) that walked. It hurts. It's hard. Do it anyway. I did a total of like 70 laps during a 24-hour period, once you start doing it, this becomes MUCH easier the 2nd, then 3rd, then 4th time. Etc.

My recovery time was VERY FAST - and I firmly believe it was the walking.

I dont want to be Debbie Downer herebut I'll tell you what happened for me. 2 months ago I had emergency surgery to remove my gallbladder. It went smooth, fast and I woke up feeling fine, no tube.

5 days ago, I was sleeved. I woke up on the table with 7 people around me and a tube in my throat. I was naseated and gagging and I tried to tell them but of course, I couldnt speak. I lifted my hand and started waving it around because I was freaking out and was about to throw up. No one paid attention to me so, like a person who knows whats going on but is scared would do, I reached for my mouth and tried to yank the tube out. NOW all of a sudden people are paying attention. My arms were held down and I was told to relaz. They pulled the tube oout and I felt every inch. As soon as it was out, it was followed by blue puke. (the stuff they inject to check for leaks) I was just heaving and it kept coming. They used a smelly cloth to wipe my face and I was in tears. I started freaking and my chest was hurting. I asked them not to let me have a heart attack, and then I fell asleep again.

Like I said, I dont want to be a downer or scare you, but it CAN happen. It didnt the 1st time but...yeah.

If it happens; know you're in good hands. They are taking care of you. You will be fine so long as you dont panic.

Hubby just had spine surgery a few weeks ago. After tube was out I was able to go back to recovery. His Oxygen levels kept dropping (alarms going off) b/c he kept dozing off and not breathing. VERY scary to me and he doesn't even remember it. I think they could have kept his tube in a bit longer. I will tell ya that when the nurse started talking about the fact that he couldn't have anymore pain meds until he was more alert.....he started trying to perk up.
