Where are the 50s ???

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone, I am 55 and have another six weeks to go before I am sleeved. I am struggling to keep my weight down as I must to get my surgery. (I am having it on the NHS and they insist on you staying at the set 10% loss you had to achieve to get on the list, and not regaining before surgery) I have been struggling all my life with weight and been at my highest for the last twenty years. I think that may have a big effect on how my skin looks after weightloss!!! I can't wait to join all of you who have been sleeved, your stories keep me plugging away and with luck I shall soon be able to share my successes with you. Did any of you worry about the possibilities of dying? I don't want to bring anyone down or cause any worries but I have been writing letters to my family just in case. Is this crazy, I am pretty positive and feel I will come through surgery ok but just want to cover all bases. I couldn't bear it if the worst happened and I hadn't had a chance to tell them all how much they mean to me. Did anyone else do this? Or is it just me?

There's one thing I'm really, really looking forward to....taking a step and not having to wait for my butt to catch up and stop shakin'.

Hilarious!!!

Phoenix, I was afraid of dying. It's a statistical reality that some people die during any surgery. I didn't write letters, but the itching fear was in the back of my mind. The first thing I said post-op was "Good job! I'm still here!"

I also was afraid of complications. Lucky for me, I'm a very analytical person and I know that statistics for death or disease are higher for remaining obese than for undergoing surgery. That really helped me stay focused on the prize. I just kept reminding myself the alternative to surgery was worse for me.

I am a newbie at 55, 56 in June (hey, Veggiesleever - we have the same birthday), and I am about 1/4 of the way through the process - two more nut sessions, endo (and wonderful colo at the same time- 2nd one). I know this sounds silly, but at this time the one thing I am frightened of is that they'll find something inside my body that means that I can't have the surgery - I have been abusing my body with food for so many years... There is nothing but my imagination that tells me this...

Soooo, I am looking forward to changing my life even more, even if the sx doesn't get approved, but it is nice to see that we in our 50s are still charging forward with our pursuit of the life we deserve!

You will be amazed how much better you will feel. I had my surgery in Sept. and I have lost over 60 pounds and doing things I have never done before. Just got back from a cruise. I swam with the stingrays in a bathing suit. I walked the Mayan ruins. There was a lot of hills and walking and I did it without havving to sit down every other second to catch my breathe. And that is just the beginning. I signed up for my first 5K which is in April. It is the best thing I ever did for myself.

So I'm 58, 4 months post op and many people are telling me that I look younger and better than I did 20 years ago! I think (but I'm not sure) that's a compliment! I having good luck with no wrinkles and very little Hair loss of which I am SO thankful for!!! I have lost 61 lbs and I have about 25 to go; thing is, I feel good at this weight and I'm concerned that as I lose more I will have wrinkles. So who knows? I do a weekly (every Sunday) blog about my experiences as a 50 something....with lots of photos; especially because I have been traveling for a year! But all in all, NO COMPLAINTS.

My blog is at www.queenofcrop.com

This might be replying to an older answer but I am now 20 mos out and about a year out from reaching goal ( lost 100lbs). I turned 58 in January and found that the wrinkles increased quickly after losing all I needed to lose. My face has many but the thing I hate the most is my neck "waddle". Yuk! And my upper arms. I never really had big arms so didn't really think about them but with so much weight loss I now, as Oprah says, have "flags" that wave quite freely! Lol. I would love to have work done but no $$ for that right now. Also, I've have found it way too easy to eat junk that slides than stick to Protein and have regained about 15 lbs. trying to be on the "straight and narrow" now and up my exercise and cut carbs. It's MY choice if I don't This really is only a too, and ultimately, we will choose. I love my new look and sometimes really don't comprehend how much I accomplished so I don't want to sabotage myself.

Very conflicted. My stats are 5"8 and 242 down from 267. I have taken the pr-opp diet very seriously. Am open to all of your advise and need support, as several friends have said not to get it.

Hi everyone, I am 51 and scheduled for VSG on 3/12/12. I am waiting to hear some answers that address Dyezee's concerns. I'm not too worried about short term nausea, but I've read some blogs by those who have remained nauseous for years. Any input greatly appreciated.

Also, forgot to mention-malnutrition is not an issue as with Bypass. No replumbing!! You just have to make sure you eat Protein first with tie small Amts and take your vitamins! You will do great! Also, I am VERY prone to nausea with a weak stomach. I did fine and still an 20 mos out. Best to you.

With any life changing event you have retrain yourself. I think people get nauseea is because they think they can eat like before surgery. You have to llearn the sign of being full. You will throw up if you eat to much. Certain food still make me sick. Especailly fried or greasy foods. The old saying slip slip chew chew and walk walk reaally works. Hope this helps.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
