Laughing at myself

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I have read this forum so many times and I have seen so many people get nervous right before surgery. I have a lap-band so I am familiar with the Mexico surgery experience. I talked to the coordinator and they have offered me a date of March 7. Just over 2 weeks away. Dr Aceves - lots of glowing recommendations. Awesome, right? Now is where I laugh at myself because I am suddenly very nervous.

My partner is 100% supportive, in fact, he can't wait until I get the band out because he is so nervous about the complications I have already had. We have the money, so that isn't a real problem. I have had other surgeries that were far more invasive. So funny that I have butterflies in my stomach over this.

I am not going to let this stop me, though. I want the surgery. I can't wait to put my hand on my stomach and not feel the implant. That is really what I am after - the additional weight loss will be icing on the cake.

I am going to wait to give my final decision until this afternoon. I also happen to have a meeting with the CIO of my company (I wonder if that is what is REALLY making me nervous?!?) After the meeting, I am hoping to have a clearer head. Thanks to everyone who writes on this forum. All the stories and information are invaluable!!

HI,

Totally understand. My surgery is next week and even though I have been through the band surgery I am scared to death. Sometimes I even think about canceling. After readying all the great posts I realize that I am even more chicken to cancel. So happy to be getting this band out and looking forward to the rest of my life with the sleeve. Flying from Florida on Monday and will be picked up and taken to Mexicali.

There is someone who helped me a lot. Here screen name is WASA and even though I have rarely PM'd her, I would read all of her posts and answers. Just found this site and everyone seems so helpful.

Good Luck on your decision.

Karen

Since I have not had my surgery yet, I would like to know exactly why you are getting a revision from the Band? What complications have you had? Why wasnt the Band successful for you?

Hi Lara! Welcome! I don't think you're alone in feeling nervous -- having had surgeries myself prior to my sleeve, I too was nervous. :) Some other really active posters here that have had the revision are Tiffykins and LilMissDiva -- I know I'm forgetting some, but they're very helpful about revisions :) Good luck to you on your surgery -- I know it will go great! :)

As much as I HATED my band, I also almost cancelled my VSG surgery at the last minute. I am SOOO glad I didn't though. It's been over a year now, and it's the best thing I've done. Sometimes I'll put my hand where the port was and remember how I could feel it, how it would bump against my ribs and get in the way. It's so wonderful to have all that plastic OUT of my body. VSG surgery is scary - that's for sure. But it is so worth it - I know you won't regret it. Good luck!!

I'll just be an echo here - but I wanted to say that you are NOT alone in your feelings. I've had other laparascopic surgeries so I should be somewhat secure in knowing how I'll feel afterward. I couldn't have been more wrong. As the day of surgery approached, I was anxious and shaky. I realized that I was nervous because this was a new beginning for me. I couldn't keep the smile off my face in pre-op.

I've never regretted my decision. I'm looking forward to a really bright future.

Hi Lara-

I just got back from Dr. Aceves. Please check out my videos on you tube and/or my blog in my signature. They are almost a bit too detailed! LOL!

Dr. Aceves is one of the most kind hearted physicians I have ever met. It was an awesome experience. Good luck.

Seriously, you all are the BOMB!!!! So supportive!! I wish I could give each of you a big hug...

Over the weekend (after the big meeting and having a couple of good night's sleep) I am feeling much more relaxed. I even talked to my mom about it. She knew I had the band, but we never talked about it. I told her why the band sucks so much and she was shocked that haven't had it taken out earlier. I didn't really need her approval, but somehow it was nice to have it.

So, it's official. I'm driving to Mexicali on 3/7 - which is also my 37th birthday.

I can't wait!!!!!!!!!! Get this band OUT OF ME!

I feel like I can't say thank you enough - you guys are great.

Everyone has a different experience. Mine has been that it doesn;t work very well and the feeling of having the apparatus in me has been an ongoing source of angst. I can't bend over with pants on, I can't stretch backwards, I can only lay on my side for a few minutes, eating is very uncomfortable. Also, getting the adjustments is a pain. After 3.5 years, I can say that it does almost nothing for me and the nuisance of having it is not worth it at all.

But, that was my experience...

good luck!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
