Stopped the daily weigh ins!

Recommended Posts

OK ok I was a bit obsessed with the scale and found myself jumping on the thing daily (or more--sigh) which only seemed to depress me with the lack of movement on the darn thing! So I gave up the habit ! The weight seems to be coming off so slowwwwwwwwwly ---grrr.

But, if you do the math, even one pound a week is a 500 calorie deficit every day which in the old days would have had me starving and sneeking food. I decided that even a pound a week is great progress. Why was I kicking myself? I am not gaining. These pounds took 20 years to put on. if it takes me a year or two to take them off ---fantastic!!!

So today I stepped on the old scale and I was 204 :) When compared my last month's number of 211 , I am down a very respectable 7 lbs. even through Christmas goodies and no exercise to speak of (unless you count shopping!)

I have started walking every morning 45-60 min with my new dog and we have even tried to jog (made it 1/3 mile 3 times last week) which is something I have not been able to do in well over a decade or two. I feel amazing and have TONS of energy. I have found myself running up and down my stairs just because it feels good! (weird).......before I never set foot up there unless I absolutely had to and it was an effort to make it I can tell you!

So everyone, please don't rush yourself or beat yourself up. Hide that scale and just enjoy the new you!

I thought I was the only person obsessed with the scale. I used to find myself jumpin on the nearest one. Guess we're a lil anxious!!! And congrats on your lost. I think the closer you get to your goal the slower the weight comes off....as long as it's coming off though:)

THIS IS SUCH A GREAT POST!!!!!!!

For a lot of the newbies this is a good lesson to be learnt early because that scale can REALLY consume your life and its all the other great things about losing inches and weight that has nothing to do with that number on the scale

You are so very positive! I am one of those that weighs every day. I am 7 weeks post op today though. It doesn't move every day and I am ok with that. Good luck to you!

I too am obsessed with the scale and i think it's because the weight was melting off directly after surgery. However , now that I am 5 weeks post op I am finding that it really isnt moving at all and I am soooo frustrated!!! I really need to find a way to stay off the scale for an extended period of time. I have lost 35 pounds soo far and that in and of itself is amazing in 5 weeks. Need to look at the positives !!!!

What a positive post!!!! Thanks for the encouragement... this slow loosing can be sooo frustrating.

I had to give up the scale about 3 months out.... it took me another 2 months to really break the habit. I weight once a month now and usually loose 1-2 lbs per month. As long as things are moving in the right direction I guess I shouldnt complain about the pace.

take care

I was one who used to only weigh once or twice per week. But recently I have been getting really close to some major goals that I've been working on for so long - so I'd been finding myself weighing every single day.

My Hubby is getting annoyed with it - and says I'm not supposed to be doing it, but I do it anyway. He's right though, I really shouldn't. When the scale says something I don't like I get moody.

Well now that I've seen what I've wanted for the longest time, I need to stop getting on it every day and go back to regular routine.

Yah well - I'll at least try, its a hard habit to break. Good luck all!!! It really is better to not weigh every day. :) Celebrate ALL the good that comes during weight loss!!!

Congrats to you My New Life! :D

yep... you're right; the scales can be evil. I weigh daily, but I have learnt not to let what they say effect my mood now... taken me 6mths though!! =]

I weigh every day, haven't been able to break myself of that habit yet. But it doesn't affect my mood at all, I agree with you - it didn't take me 6 months to put this weight on and it isn't going to all come off in 6 months either. I actually like to see my weight, I am at numbers I haven't been at in a very long time and it makes me happy. :)

I have the same "problem" - even worse, because I sometimes weigh myself before bedtime too.

But as some know, I try to only let the good affect myself and shrug off a bad weigh-in.

I weigh myself sometimes twice a day. I get very obsessive. I know that right now I'm doing it because I am supposed to lose 10 pounds before surgery and I'm trying really hard to meet that goal. Like Tiffnie, I've been losing and gaining the same two pounds. blink.gif

I am sooooo incredibly proud of you! I've been preaching this concept for over 1 year ! You don't need to weigh yourself every minute! I'm happy with once a month or so myself. . .like i would say "you don't need to be a slave to the scale" the weight will come off! Congratulations once again! Keep doing what your doing!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
