African American Sleevers

  • Popular Post

Hi All!

I wanted to start a thread for African-American sleevers (no worries I HEART all sleevers from the rainbow). I just thought, no scientific proof, that African-American sleevers may respond to the surgery different than our lovely non-African American sleeved sisters and brothers. I wanted to know if we had the same skin issue, hair problems, and other surgery related issues. Also, how to deal with the culture shock. African-American "soul food" may be something of the past... or not. So I was just looking for a space to voice culture related issues and concens.

PS- I TRULY  ALL SLEEVERS.

Oh I'm so happy to see this thread and so many responses and interactions. I'm biracial African American and Asian. I have a surgeon whose partner is African American but I ended up with the other surgeon for experience reasons. I still have the other one to consult with if necessary. There is also a African American nurse in the office that I like to talk to so this helps me. I wear my hair natural but my hair is weird. It's allergic to a lot. I also get keloids. I get sleeved next month on the 24th. I'm in San diego and I'm 39. I have multiple health issues some weight related. Others not. Autoimmune disease, chronic pain disorders.i was supposed to get RNY but surgeon felt it wasn't a good idea due to my preexisting conditions so we settled for the sleeve. I love to eat diverse ethnic foods and moderately spicy wondering if I will be able to continue that??

Anyways thats a bit about me...

I don't really consider myself an ethnically diverse eater, we mostly have chain restaurants in my area, but I do like spicy ( not necessarily hot) foods and have had relatively few issues tolerating them post op. I had a hiatal hernia repair during surgery and have had no issues with acid reflux since.

I enjoy spicy food and often add freshly cut chilli peppers to my food. I've been fortunate not to have any issues at all. I was sleeved end of March. I think everyone's body is different you will probably have to do some testing to see what your new tummy will handle

Awesome

I get terrible acid reflux when I eat spicy food. Think of fire breathing! It's worse acid reflux than I had previously.

Yes being tired for a while is normal because you are not eating much and body needs to adjust but be cheerful it will get better drink your water and take your vitamins this is very important

I'm 18 months post op and can eat a little spicy food occasionally if I do to much I have terrible heart burn or get gassy

I'm 18 months post op and I can't do hot sauce but I can and do cook with crush red pepper and haven't had a problem I haven't figured it out yet but I'll take it

I have hot suace and hot wings all the time. I don't have issues. before 9 months I had to take antacid when I had them. Now I don't. I pretty much eat normally.

I eat both hot sauce and buffalo wings with no issues but I did have a hiatal hernia repair during surgery and haven't had any issues since ( suffered from acid reflux pre)
