African American Sleevers

 • Popular Post

Hi All!

I wanted to start a thread for African-American sleevers (no worries I HEART all sleevers from the rainbow). I just thought, no scientific proof, that African-American sleevers may respond to the surgery different than our lovely non-African American sleeved sisters and brothers. I wanted to know if we had the same skin issue, hair problems, and other surgery related issues. Also, how to deal with the culture shock. African-American "soul food" may be something of the past... or not. So I was just looking for a space to voice culture related issues and concens.

PS- I TRULY  ALL SLEEVERS.

Hello all! I am new to this site, and glad I came across this thread! I just had my surgery 3/21/14. I heard these first few weeks would be hard, and so far, yes it sucks, but it's manageable. Plus, I keep thinking of the bigger picture, and know it's worth it.

I am a weave wearer and wonder if the hair loss has caused any difference for those who wear weaves. From what I read, if I keep my protein up I should be fine, but I'm just curious on the weave front if anyone had noticed a difference.

-Chanlissa

While I don't wear a weave, I decided to chime in :) I was considering wearing a weave but chose to wear a wig instead. I found one for the immediate postop period so I wouldn't have to worry about my hair and love it so much I decided to wear it for 6 months postop (even though I don't plan on stopping wearing it). It's the hair I have in my pictures. As far as my own hair, when I wash it I definitely notice some shedding, but most definitely no significant loss or thinning, no bald spots or any loss of length (I'm bra strap length). Ive permed it once since surgery because my roots were out of control. I moisturize and seal and have it in 4 braids and could wear it in a braid out too but don't want to manipulate it too much. I don't wash it often right since it isn't hot. I don't think ill ever stop wearing this wig!!

My hair started thinning since week 2 post op surg. I started biotin 5000mg from Sam's n I promise it made a difference after a week of using it. As of today my hair is not thinning and the the thinned parts has filed In. Biotin is really good.

Sorry for the multiple post my computer is tired. Good nite all lol

I've lost 62lbs Yay! The stalls? I've heard a lot of people said go back to the beginning.....No way! I was soooo weak and dizzy. I've started at stage 5...I hope that jump starts it. I don't eat much at all, but I think it's the fact that we start to eat again our bodies are so happy and overjoyed about it again, it doesn't know what to do now LOL! Keep in touch! We can reach our goals together :)

I'm down! Share your tips! I'm upping my protein and goin to add in some more vigorous exercise.

Feel free to PM! I promise not to stalk you....-@

I thought about going to wigs for a while so I can get to my hair and keep an eye on it. I may consider this. Thanks!

Greetings from sunny Florida!! I am scheduled to be sleeved on April 8 in Mexico with Dr. Garcia. Im happy to be a part of such a wonderful community.
