African American Sleevers

 • Popular Post

Hi All!

I wanted to start a thread for African-American sleevers (no worries I HEART all sleevers from the rainbow). I just thought, no scientific proof, that African-American sleevers may respond to the surgery different than our lovely non-African American sleeved sisters and brothers. I wanted to know if we had the same skin issue, hair problems, and other surgery related issues. Also, how to deal with the culture shock. African-American "soul food" may be something of the past... or not. So I was just looking for a space to voice culture related issues and concens.

PS- I TRULY  ALL SLEEVERS.

Well that's good to know. Definitely don't want my hair to fall out!!!!! Thanks for the info.

I was sleeved on 1/7 and it's been an amazing 14days. 21 pounds down 11lb preop 10 postop, although I think about food I have no taste for it. My focus is to get my 60gm of protein stay below my 800 calories and sip as much water as possible. I am so ready to be 100 pounds lighter. Good Luck everyone

Congrats!! It will come off MUCH quicker than you think!! It's truly amazing to be honest.

Hello everyone on day 2 of my clear liquid and I must admit it's not bad. Can't wait to join the losers bench. Having surgery on the 30th can't wait. Just hoping I can tolerate protein shakes after.

what I hate to hear that yes babies are a gift but who whats to get pregnant right after wls I refuse to be on any bc however I am 42. I know that means what lol Brandi was that you first child?

This is my 2nd. My first son is 15.

I was sleeved on Monday, surgery went well. Arrived at hospital at 8am was on surgery by 11:30, was in room by 2:30pm.woke up with a NG tube down my nose (my MD does as a protocol to prevent vomiting) also had a drain. Was NPO until 24 hours. On Tuesday morning was given leak test with horrible tasting blue dye. (abt 5 oz) it took my 2 hours to drink, but no leaks. Then they gave me a 20oz water bottle with crystal lite. That took me 6 hours to drink. MD d/c me around 6pm and I was able to sleep in own bed last night. So far no nausea or vomiting...incisions & tummy muscles very sore. (Hard to get in/out of bed). But all in all things are going well. My new schedule includes walking and sipping.

Post op day one! I feel great and have only had some nausea and vomiting. Going to try to nap. Hope everyone here is doing well!

Because of Obamacare my company restructured their insurance plans. I bought the best plan and it has 100% bariatric surgery coverage. So my out of pocket expense was just 250 for hospital admission. I'm still insured under my husband's insurance policies, so they are picking up that 250 copay.

In short, my hospital visit and surgery are completely covered! I'm through Kaiser Permanente in Denver, CO

Hopefully I'm going home today

Congratulations on your surgery I am 16 days post op, and I feel like myself. I am on full liquids and everything is going well so far, I am 24.5lbs down. 10 preop 14.5 postop. I can't wait to see a difference when I look in the mirror

Glad u are feeling well. What was ur out of pocket expense if u don't mind me asking. I just don't want to blind sided. I have UHC

My out of pocket was $2000.00 but it includes a out of pocket max so I won't have any other copays for the remainder of the year. It was a little steep on my pockets, but worth it.

Hi everyone I am AA woman who just my appointment to get sleeved on 2/24. I am from Chicago, IL, recently married with 2 children. I can't wait to sleeved.

Congrats to everyone just staring their story and congrats to all those who have joined the "losers bench"

I've been sleeved since June and I'm loving life!! My biggest issue has been with my hair!! I finally have decided to just braid it all and get a wig!! Ugh!!

Everyone says it's temporary and will grow back. Small price to pay for a much better quality of life.

Keep your Protein Water and Biotin up and that should help. I'm 6.5 weeks out and haven't noticed any shedding but I realize it may come soon.
